Where do I even start? Mattel's been killing it with the Jurassic World license for a full year now (minus a few..."mehh" figures here and there, I personally don't care for the excessive repacks and repaints)..BUT..their Indominus Rex is on a whole other level of their Jurassic dinosaur craftsmanship. Jurassic World is creeping up on its 4 year anniversary and I couldn't have asked for a better way to honor it by getting this in hand as of yesterday. Kinda feels back a payback for old memories. I remember buying the Hasbro one the week before the movie's release, and how I'll always remember how underwhelming it was. It was so wonky and disproportionate and couldn't stand on it's own. I threw it in my closet and forgot about it shortly after. Every time I tried to like it, I just couldn't get past how out of place it looked next to the old Kenner line and new Mattel offerings. I got rid of it last summer because I had faith Mattel would eventually make one, and make it right. It took almost a year, but it was definitely worth the wait. So here's my review: Packaging: Standard Dino Rivals packaging, only this one has a render of the Indominus Rex in place of the usual triceratops. The unique thing about this packaging is it came with a plastic tab that I had to remove from the dinosaur before it made sounds. Otherwise, nothing much new here. Sculpt: This is without a doubt the most accurate representation of the Indominus Rex we've received in toy form. It looks like it came right out of the film, every scale, bump and spike you could want is there - this thing has detail for days. The head sculpt is ON POINT - not to mention, she has nice hard plastic individually sculpted TEETH!! No rounded off rubber chunks or lazily painted nubs! It's the real deal. Her feet are a tad large, but it supports the action feature, and the tail could be an inch or two longer. I would have also preferred the arm quills to be a bit more pronounced like her neck quills are. But these are minor nitpicks, nothing that distracts from her greatness. Paint: Mattel nailed the simplicity of the Indominus Rex's iconic white skin without making it boring to look at. And that's hard to do. There's subtle shades of grey along the back and darker tones on the face and around the skull sockets to make the eyes pop. The eyes aren't too bad but leave some contrast to be desired. The feet claws are painted with a nice gloss but the hand claws aren't for some reason. Nothing that can't be fixed with some acrylics. Oh and let's give an applause for individually painted teeth! Action feature: I'm having a blast with this. There's two buttons; the first one on her back triggers a slashing action with her claws similar to the grab n' growl Indoraptor. The other one on the base of the tail opens her mouth and activates the iconic roar. She has three roars and one of them triggers the light inside the throat. Similar to the Thrash n' Throw T rex, you can maneuver her around with the tail and grab smaller dinosaurs or people and swallow them whole. But I think this accomplishes that better than the TnT Rex. She's not too horribly articulated other than the basic articulation points the other therapods in the line have. She does have poseable elbow joints, though I would have liked articulated wrists like the Indoraptor has too, but it's not a big deal. As a bonus, her mouth can open wide enough to bite the gyrosphere from the Claire story pack, just how the movie scene looks. But don't count on trying pick it up with the action feature. It can't go that far, unfortunately. Overall: This toy may be 4 years overdue, but all things considered this is the Indominus Rex toy us Jurassic fans deserve and more. Beautiful sculpt, great action features, and she absolutely dwarfs the other figures in the line. I have a scale photo with the Thrash n Throw, the new savage strike Blue and Owen and Claire for reference. Everything about it is so classic for a JP/ JW dinosaur toy that it even outshines Kenner in some areas. I think this just about nearly cleans up the mess Hasbro made with their disastrous Jurassic World toyline. I can't stress how much this toy does the Indominus Rex the justice it desperately deserved. I hope Mattel is proud and can release more dinosaurs like this in their future waves.
