Lots of features for the money.
Was looking into purchasing a vehicle with in-dash navigation, and a back-up camera. Today you can get this type of vehicle without selling and making monthly payments for new ride. I got the DVD version of Pioneer AVX 1400NEX because it is cheaper and I do still listen to cds sometimes while on the road. I installed it into my ‘06 Element EX and I ended up buying soldering iron, dash tools, tapes, backup camera, and all necessary harnesses, axxess steering control retainer. Trim finish bezel as well from Soche NOT Maetra. (Took back the Maetra didn’t care for .5” inset) Took me about a month from start to finish but I did it all by my lonesome and it works great! So far so good. The stock stereo served reliably for over 12 years. Will see how long this piece of technology will last but so far I’m enjoying it. If you are a DIY it’s possible to install it yourself and save a bit of cash and customize the install. I wired it so that the backup camera comes on not only when in reverse but has a selection to turn it on in this unit even when moving forward or stopped. I installed a small panel for the stereos USB and 3.5 port. Everything works to my satisfaction and I would highly recommend this unit to my friends, family, coworkers, etc. if I have a newer vehicle I probably would opt for the non DVD version. You do not need a car already equipped with Apple CarPlay to begin with. My car never did and ACP is sooo nice. Now I sit in traffic and I don’t mind because I can enjoy this stereo’s quality sound output customizable with optional bass boost or EQ settings. Few ways to tweak the sound. Nice to have Siri to help with hands free assistance when driving. For the money definitely what I need for an older model car most definitely a lot of bang for the buck.

Phenomenal value, great head unit, apple CarPlay works perfectly in my 2011 Toyota Prius
This unit is GREAT. Sounds amazing, easy to use, CarPlay works perfectly. I installed this with the METRA ASWC-1, and the "Panel Flush Mount Extension Cable,Car 3.5 mm USB 3.0 AUX Jack Extension Cable Lead Mounting Panel Headphone Male Jack Flush Mount Mounting Adapter"... Metra 95-8226B Dash Kit for Toyota Prius 2010 Double DIN (Black), Metra 70-1761 Radio Wiring Harness For Toyota 87-Up Power 4 Speaker, and the Rockford Fosgate P300-12. I ran "KabelDirekt RCA Stereo Cable/Cord (20 ft/feet Long, Dual 2 x RCA Male to 2 x RCA Male Audio Cable, Digital & Analogue, Double-Shielded, PRO Series) Supports (Amplifiers, AV Receivers, Hi-Fi)" and a 20ga remote wire. I used 8 GA cable and a circuit breaker at the battery for the RF amp. I was careful to read the directions thoroughly, soldered and shrink wrapped every connection, plugged it all in and it works perfectly. This combination allows every function to work, to include apple CarPlay, the AUX cable input, steering wheel controls, etc. It softens the blow of climbing into a Prius every day!

Quite happy AVH-1400NEX
I was tired of waiting for a lower priced wireless CarPlay receiver. The $236 for the DVD version convinced me to pull the trigger. Without the USB cable to iPhone: The Pandora app works decently over Bluetooth but sometimes requires launching from the iPhone if you were listening to some other audio app (Podcast, iHeart etc.). But a lot of the time it fires right up. I actually find the Bluetooth connection to Pandora connects better than selecting Pandora from the receiver. Siri works quite well when pressing the microphone button. You can ask about the weather, your next calendar appointment, launch navigation (however maps only launches on the phone screen if not USB tethered. I consider that great because the receiver screen can be for music and the phone for navigation). With the USB cable to iPhone: You get Google Maps, Apple Maps, Waze maps - all quite fast and responsive. The Apple texting app works awesome while tethered. Siri will read and then voice respond to text messages. The touch screen works quite well. Dims and brightens nicely if you wire the input. The USB connection is on the back so I can hide the wiring without the USB cable hanging off the front of the receiver. It comes with decent USB extension cable that I run in my console. I can swap a lightening cable for a micro USB cable whenever I wish. The USB port only charges when the deck is powered up. Easy to switch between the many preset graphic EQs and the two user custom EQs from Pandora. Pandora has six user selectable presets so you can quickly go between your favorite stations. The only thing I am not thrilled with is a legal prompt that happens every time the deck starts up. It does self clear if you ignore it. But, say you had the music loud when you shut the deck off. The volume controls are locked out (possibly blaring music) until that legal prompt clears. It has a cooling fan on the back of the receiver and it looks to be one that I could easily replace if ever needed. Can't talk about screen glare yet because the weather has been lousy lately. As I think of other things I like I will add later. But I really do enjoy this deck. If my commute was longer than eight minutes I would value it a lot more.

Amazing Unit, Crappy Buttons
I’ve been using my Pioneer AVH-1400NEX for a week now, so I feel I can make a solid review on it. In general, this is a fantastic unit for the money. Carplay is great, Bluetooth is seamless, and video/sound quality is really good. One thing I didn’t know before hand is that THIS UNIT DOES NOT SUPPORT WIRELESS CARPLAY. Pioneer has other, more expensive units that do support wireless carplay, but this unit requires a USB connection. I find that I’m fine with this because I always have my phone charging in the car anyway. In the shade or at night, the display looks incredible. It really does feel like you’ve got a brand new car. However, during the daytime, the sunlight glare blocks the radio to where you can hardly see the screen. To combat this, I turned my brightness, contrast, and dimmer settings all the way up, and now I find that it works well during day and night. My biggest complaint with this unit is the buttons. These things are CHEAP. They don’t have a good click to them, and the home button on my particular unit is downright squishy (no click at all when you press it). I believe they just aren’t very well built, and they are also quite small, so you have to get used to finding them while driving and whatnot. Other than that, I’m super happy with this unit! I would also highly recommend ordering the $15 parking brake bypass as it will unlock all the features of this unit without needing to be in park, and it was very easy to install!

Great Head Unit – Still Going Strong
Absolutely love this unit. I bought it in late December of 2023 for my 2005 Chevy Tahoe, and here we are in mid-March 2026 and it’s still working perfectly. I use the Apple CarPlay feature all the time, and it has been flawless. To keep the install looking clean, I replaced one of the factory power outlets with a USB port, so I can plug the cable directly into the dash instead of having wires hanging everywhere. I’m still a little old school and like having a CD player, so that was a must when I was searching for the right unit. This one checked all the boxes for me. Important note: If your vehicle has the factory Bose sound system, you will need a specific wiring harness to make everything work correctly. I had a local audio installer handle that part of the install. Overall, I couldn’t be happier with it.

Great Stereo!
I have had a great experience so far. I bought a full sized truck cause I’ve always wanted one. Parking and backing up is pretty challenging. This headunit with a backup cam makes is much easier to maneuver. It made my stock stereo sound much better. It integrates with my phone wonderfully. Auto connects and starts playing right where you left off. Brightness is reasonable. Not too bright at night and bright enough to be reasonably visible in sunny conditions. Install was not difficult at all. I bought a factory wire harness and soldered all the wires on the bench. Then just plugged it up like it belonged there when installing. Only trouble was with the backup camera and that is due to me blowing a fuse when wiring camera to backup light bulb. Overall well worth the money for me.

I Upgraded My Tucson 🚙✨🔊📱
I just installed the DVD version on my 2010 Hyundai Tucson GLS. It works wonderfully! LIKES 👍: The screen is more visible in sunlight than my iPhone 8Plus. This was a big issue for me because I use my GPS a lot. My factory speakers sound better! (I’m not going to install an amp & a sub like I planned.) The touchscreen is very responsive. There is a lot of options to customize (EQ, illumination color, background image, etc). I use CarPlay and it works like a charm. It upgraded my vehicle for just $235. Overall, this unit matches its description perfectly. DISLIKES 👎: As mentioned in other reviews, the warning screen shows up each time the unit starts. So if you were blasting music (like I usually do), it would still be at that level. You can’t change the volume until you press OK in the warning message. This has happened when I play a CD (don’t judge lol) or use Pandora. It’s not really a problem for me, but it would be nice if that screen did not have to pop up each time I start my car. I don’t have any other dislikes yet. I’ll update after I play my first DVD

Decent, ok for the price
Only use this for the apple car play and backup cam. Addition of a graphic EQ is nice, in the native OS. The screen renders colors in an ugly and washed out way. It's for an older car though, so it's acceptable. Dimmer for night mode works well. When in car play, the unit is pretty quick. Sound quality is about what I'd expect. Better than the stock unit. So, if you're not using apple car play/android auto, the unit operating system is terrible. Slow and laggy, looks dated as hell. It's clear that Pioneer was intending for it to be used with apple car play or android auto because there was next to zero effort put into the native software.

Software Descontinuado
