Eight ready-to-go activity packets sharpen students' word-study skills and boost their vocabularies. In each packet, students learn five common Greek and Latin roots and 15 new words formed from these roots. Crossword puzzles, word searches, and other fun activities provide repeated practice to make new vocabulary stick. Perfect for independent work or for homework. Review: In the long run, Greek and Latin roots are best to learn vocabulary - I have homeschooled my children off and on for many years, so I have experience with different vocabulary programs. My 7th-grade son failed English at the public school this year, and they wanted him to go to summer school. I chose to use some of my old homeschooling language arts curriculum and supplemented this book for vocabulary. I need to get him ready for the very challenging magnet school he was accepted to and will attend in 9th grade. This workbook is the right length for summer learning. I chose this workbook because it is based on the Greek and Latin roots. If he knows those, he will be better equipped to understand many other vocabulary words (without rote memorization) and to improve his spelling. The book is broken up into bite-sized units with exposure to a handful of roots at a time. At first glance, I thought this would be too easy for him, but there are challenges hidden in the book. They make you think beyond the basic definition and experiment with how the roots are hidden in our English words. The crossword puzzles are a challenge for his grade level...I even got stumped a couple times (though I don't like crossword puzzles AT ALL). This is the best way to learn since he needs to research things for himself. The work doesn't take long each day, and we reinforce with other products. We use Book Shark readers and read-alouds, the Paperback and Word Jam card games, and the Carson Dellosa Education Grammar workbook for grades 7-8. Review: Just the right approacj - This is perfect - introduces the word roots with explanations that are clear and focused, and the following pages are challenging enough for my upper level learners but not overwhelming for my struggling learners. I can pick and choose which activities or assignments to use, and I know my students are receiving a good foundation of vocabulary expansion for the future. It also provides them with an understanding that other languages, particularly Spanish, share our language roots (ahem - let the Spanish speakers guide us on this one).

Lots of student work. Not much instruction.
Great for worksheets to supplement learning. Not a stand alone for instruction or home schooling.

Simple fun activities that does teach Latin & Greek roots. My son likes it.
My son is going into 8th grade and requested help with learning Greek & Latin roots because he thought it would help him with spelling, reading comprehension and science. Just to be clear, my son generally dislikes workbooks. The summer bridge workbook I bought him, he found boring and he completely far less than half. However, heโs been really enjoying this workbook. The workbook is slim, 1/5 the size of a summer bridge workbook but the activities are fun which means heโs actually completing the work. Frankly, for his age, the activities are simple, crosswords, fill in the black, word matching etc. but they *do* drill home the roots and thatโs the point. My son has been doing this and alongside the โninja rootsโ flash cards I bought on amazon also. There is some overlap in roots so far but they reinforce each other. The flash cards are interactive (with me) and verbal, the workbook is independent and written. I wish there was a book 2 and 3, because heโs definitely picking up the info and there are a lot more roots out there to learn.

Well-organized Book to Help Students Build Vocabulary
I really like this book. It's divided into sections - each portion has an overview, practice, and game (there are word searches, crossword puzzles, or other fun ways for students to practice and apply what they learn). This book would be easy for a parent use to supplement his/her child's education and the units are really short and have only five roots each. I've used units in class as a supplementary homework assignment. These lessons would also be great for substitute teachers who need to prepare their own lesson that is both useful and isolated. Because roots are so important to the English language there are always teaching opportunities to point out how these roots are used in real-world/class examples.

Beware of inaccuracies
I haven't gone through the whole book yet, but when I looked at Unit 1, spec is listed as a Latin root; the base is actually spect. I will go through these and make notes on the pages as necessary before I have my child fill out, but it will be confusing for the exercises that have a certain number of letters, such as crossword, word puzzle, etc. I meant for this to be independent work for my homeschooler while I'm teaching other children, and it will require more explanations than I had hoped.

While fairly easy and not as many words as we would have ...
I bought this for my grade 8 homeschooler. While fairly easy and not as many words as we would have liked, it was quite interesting and my daughter really enjoyed it.
