The Simple Solution to Rubik's Cube Mass Market Paperback – January 1, 1981

I got a cube back in 1980 and never really made an effort to figure out how to solve it. So I recently bought another one and did some internet searches to find a solution, thinking it wouldn't be that difficult. I mean, if 10 year olds can do it in mere seconds, how hard can it be, right? And yet, I never did find a site that made much sense to me. I suspect that I am somewhat weak with regard to three dimensional spatial awareness. Anyhow, along the way in my internet searching, I read that this was a good book (not the fastest method, but still a good book). I didn't care how long it was going to take me to solve it - speed was not going to be my goal. I just wanted to be able to solve the darn thing once and for all.I don't know if some of the other people reviewing this book are much smarter than I am, but I still found it a little challenging to follow at times. I would not have been able to follow it at age 10 like some of these other people say they did. But the point is that I stuck with it and was able to solve it in the end! Now that I've finished doing it, I'm going to scramble the cube again and again and work through it over and over. I haven't memorized any of the steps yet and I want to do that.Don't be discouraged if you do one step and then get a little lost trying to follow the next step. Put the cube down for a while if you get frustrated and then come back to it later. I am so excited that I finally did it! This really is a great book for somebody who just wants to be able to solve a cube - I highly recommend it.

When I was a teen, I got this solution book for a present and went on to memorize the solution set to solve the cube in less than 3 minutes.In my late 50s, I wanted to sharpen my motor skills and mind and got a cube and this book.It is like a long list good friend!! I was able to pick up the tips and solve the cube!The illustrations make it very easy to follow!

Hard to beat this as a basic guide for those who don't aspire to be speed-cubers in a week, but simply want a succinct leg up on how movements on the cube work. You can use it to help get your head around basic patterns and moves, or follow it in detail when you get to that point of frustration where you just want to believe it's actually possible to solve the darn thing. In my case, I enjoyed puzzling out the moves needed to solve the first two layers on my own but never found time to work out the very long-sequence moves needed for solving the final face of the cube without messing up the rest. I used the book for myself as a guide to understanding those, but I also used the early chapters as a guide to help my six year old learn to solve the first two layers. Mr. Nourse's step-by-step approach is well organized. He writes out algorithms in a clear, brief, and friendly style as far as such things go; however, the cube is a deceptively complex puzzle that takes a little work to get your head around. If you are looking for a magic set of easy moves anyone can memorize in 5 minutes… hint: forget it. I hope the publishers bring this title back, at least as an e-book. It's a nice contrast to the speed-cubing textbooks that seem to be on the market now.

For most who were able to solve this great puzzle cube may have had the book, which I did. I found a collection of Rubic's Cubes at a swap meet and was happy I could find another book. Took a while to retrain my brain but it came back to me. It is simple fun that is great for the mind.

Believe this is out of print.It has a different way of solving the cube's lower corners that is easier to memorize.

It the old solution book I used in high school

I originally owned a copy of this book years ago and easily learned and memorized the steps to solve "the cube" using the guidance provided. I can't say that I recall my personal best time on solving the puzzle; but the patterns were easy enough to memorize that I could find the solution while talking to friends or walking down the street. Considering all the possible moves, I think that's it's impressive that the book is simple enough to memorize those solutions. My original must have found it's way into a garage sale years ago, so I purchased a recent copy and a new cube. If my brain can still understand it at my age, anybody can use this book to solve this frustrating little puzzle and maybe even actually impress their spouse or, amazingly, their children! I see that other reviews that say there are solutions requiring fewer moves and I have no reason to question that. All I can say is that the solutions provided in this book are easy to understand and that they work!

Back in the early eighties, my brother and I had bought rubik's cube because we each wanted to see how fun it would be to solve. While the cube was enjoyable to manipulate, we couldn't get back to each side being one color. Then, my brother bought this book some where and finally we were able to complete the cube. It has been many years and my brother lost the book. About a month ago I pulled my old cube out of the closet, but I couldn't remember how to solve it. I was glad to be able to find this book again. The book arrived in a timely manner and was in surprisingly good shape. It does have some wear, and the pages are a little yellow, but that is to be expected after so many years. But, like I said the book is in really good shape, and easily readable. It is too bad it was never made in E form.
