How thick is the pad in cm?

Pad is about 3/4 in. thick. I like mine would like it a bit larger, but still use mine after two years. Best part is never falls off or is a hassle.

Is this a good alternative for people with a short neck who can't find a comfortable shoulder rest?

Yes. I use one ans have been happy for two years. There is another brand that makes one that looks like a fiddle body, foam too but thicker. I like both. Best part is you can leave it on your fiddle when put it in the case!
