I’ve been using this connector several days now, and it’s working as expected. I’m using it plugged into a WiFi extender to hardwire our TV and PlayStation. This is giving us faster and more consistent connection. Even though we have fiber internet, the location it was installed in our house is not central, so we’ve had to do the extensions. And our Sony TV’s internal WiFi won’t keep a connection (a common issue for Sony TVs), and game downloads were taking too long as well as not being able to play a live game while downloading. This little box has fixed the issues. It really is just a plug-and-go item. Super easy and you don’t have to be techy to understand how it works. Keep in mind that one port will be dedicated to the WiFi box or extender, so buy the size you need accordingly. If you’ve got 6 devices to connect, you need at least 7 ports. I didn’t know what “looping” was, so after looking into it, I left that switch to “off.” It was not recommended, and warned of slowing speeds and mixing up devices. It’s working great so far. TV connection hasn’t faltered since switching to the box (and not directly into extender box). And the PlayStation downloaded a game in 5mins that, unwired, estimated 30mins! My husband was very happy. He then downloaded Cyberpunk 2077, which is a huge file. When he tried downloading it unwired, it quoted like half a day, lol. Hardwired, it took less than 1.5hrs, AND, at the same time, he was able to play a college football game that uses the network for live play. One thing to note: this did change our IP address, so when we went into Hulu after getting it connected, we got the “it looks like you’re not at home?” message. We had to “update our home location” even though we didn’t really move. You get 4 of these home changes a year, so just FYI. I’m sure Hulu is familiar with this and would work it out if you don’t have any home address changes left, but the hassle and time would be annoying. Overall, I couldn’t be more pleased. If this box stops working after a time, I’ll update my review. But for $12.50 on sale, it’s a steal. The box itself seems quality and well made. It’s got a weight to it and was packaged well. Definitely recommend.

I bought the TP-Link TL-SG105 5‑port Gigabit Ethernet Switch to upgrade my home network, specifically to connect several wired devices simultaneously including my desktop PC, network-attached storage, gaming console, and media streaming box. After using it for a few weeks, I am very pleased with its performance. Setting it up was effortless. I plugged in power and connected the device with Ethernet cables. There was no configuration needed, the switch is truly plug-and-play, which is a big plus if you want things to work immediately without messing around with settings. In my personal experience, the biggest difference was noticeable during a weekend where I was streaming 4K video on the TV while backing up large files from my NAS to my PC and playing an online game at the same time. Before the switch, my network would slow down and lag. With the TL-SG105, everything ran smoothly without interruptions, and I could feel the improvement instantly. Performance has been rock solid. All connected devices register full gigabit speeds consistently. Transferring large files between my NAS and PC showed stable high throughput with no noticeable lag or dropouts. Even during heavy use with streaming video, gaming, and backups, everything stayed smooth. The build quality is surprisingly good for the price. The metal housing feels sturdy and gives me confidence the switch will hold up in a home office or media center environment over time. It runs cool even under continuous load, which is important for reliability. Another nice aspect is size and quiet operation. The switch is compact and low-profile, making it easy to tuck behind furniture or on a shelf. There is no fan noise so it is ideal for a small office, bedroom setup, or an entertainment center where silence matters. A fun idea I tried is using this switch to create a dedicated mini media and gaming hub. I connected my TV, gaming console, PC, and NAS to the switch, added simple cable management, and labeled each port. It made my setup look professional, organized, and efficient. Now, I have a silent, high-performance wired corner that handles streaming, gaming, and file transfers all at once with no lag. It turned a simple switch into a central part of my home network setup that I really enjoy showing off. Overall, the TP-Link TL-SG105 delivers excellent value for the money. It is dependable, simple, and efficient. Update in 2024: This review is originally from 2020. This little thing is still going strong and lovely. It’s been moved several times as the home network has been changing and upgrading, and it keeps going. No complaints, just keeps working. Probably the most reliable piece of tech in my home network next to the UPS units I have for the machines. The original unit serves high demand steaming/upload download on the local network (NAS + servers in a proxmox setup). I have other units that service other parts of the home, and they work great. TLDR: If you have issues with Zoom, streaming services, or just overall spotty internet connection with your WiFi, you may want to consider getting the 5 port switch (not PoE! Save yourself some money) along with some CAT 6 cables (for gigabit internet). Unmanaged works fine for just ‘plug and play’. It’s insane how much it helps! You shouldn’t have to do much besides plugging in everything and selecting the ‘Ethernet’ option on the device if it doesn’t so automatically. They’re reliable and easy to setup and use. The long story: I had purchased the PoE one at first to allow it to later be utilized for a security station if need be (or if I had something fun to play with), but I also got the unmanaged 5 port (without PoE) on accident. The one WITHOUT PoE is much smaller (3/4 the size it feels like). I would recommend the 5 or 8 port if you just have a few things you wish to plug in to it. PoE is not something you should worry about unless you know your devices require it. My household has issues with WiFi, so many devices can’t connect well enough to have an enjoyable experience. WiFi extenders, a new router, etc, did not work for us in the past (and ended up causing many issues), so we resulted to using Ethernet for our most used devices. Our internet plan is top tier for our area, so we expected better connections. Turns out we just do a whole lot of internet stuff to bog down the main router and our bandwidth! The household setup: One switch (PoE 5 port, unmanaged) is at the router since the router only offers 2 Ethernet ports. This switch services a smart TV, computer, and free cable for whatever device we decide to plug in (be a laptop or game console). It also services another switch (5 port, unmanaged) across the house. That way we only have one Ethernet cable running across the house until we can put it under the house. The second switch services a WiFi station, computer, game console, and smart TV. The computer is on 24/7 and the TV is on a majority of the day and night streaming HD movies and shows from multiple services. All of these are fairly ‘heavy’ devices on this switch, as in they are constantly downloading or uploading content all waking hours of the day. All devices are connected with CAT 7 Ethernet cables, but CAT 6 work just fine. (I would recommend CAT 6 or CAT6a since it is certified to run gigabit. CAT 7 is overkill and I do not recommend it because of price and it’s not standardized as much as the others). Results: So far everyone in the household has noticed an improvement not only with the devices plugged into the switches, but also the overall WiFi quality. Smart phones are no longer ‘dropped’, the printer remains connected, and even most laptops are seeing better speeds and responsiveness on the WiFi. My household is especially polluted with plug and play devices (such as Amazon Echos, Ring Cameras, wireless smart plugs, etc), and all of these seem more responsive now that we have gotten the ‘heavy’ loads off of the WiFi. The second switch that is piggybacking off of the first switch has no issues, and all devices are able to preform to their peak. Even though not all of them are gigabit, they seem to greatly benefit from being on Ethernet. Zoom calls are much better too. Before we could only have 1 person on zoom but now everyone can get on so long as only one person is on WiFi. The switches do not heat too much and are easily concealable, but require power. I do not recommend stuffing them into a blanket closet or among pillows though, even though it’s tempting to hide their flashing lights. Overall they have exceeded my expectations. This review will be updated in the future if any issues arise.

Network gear doesn’t need to be flashy to be good, and this little switch is a perfect example of that. It’s compact, made of aluminum, and does its job without drawing attention to itself. The heavier housing gives it a sense of durability that a lot of plastic switches lack, and it feels more premium since not all plastic. This in unmanaged switch, so there's no setup. Just plug in your cables and go. I use mine to route direct connections to my Bluesound Node and my television, and it works perfectly for both. Will eventually connect a small audio server as well, and it's got enough ports to support most small home-based applications. It doesn't get hot (at least that I can tell) and the LED lights don't bother me. YMMV though, since some folks are more sensitive to electronic lighting, and I've also got mine facing a wall anyway. These switches are meant to be simple, reliable, and invisible. It does these well. TP-Link is a respected brand, and I totally recommend the TL-SG105 if you need a small, unmanaged switch.

Purchased the 8 port, 10 GB unmanaged switch and it is perfect. Up and running in 5 minutes with no configuration needed. All computers getting 4700/4700 on SpeedTest with virtually no jitter (1ms max) and zero loss, consistently. Now getting the full capabilities of our 5GB AT&T fiber with room to grow. Running two full-time, data intensive businesses from home, this was a must have. Coupled with Cable Matters Cat6a wiring & USB-C to 5 GB Ethernet adapters for our MacBooks and 1 Dell PC, this is an all out winning combination and well worth the price. Runs cool too, even under heavy load.

I had only a couple of older 5 port TP-Link switches that were only 10/100mbs. I needed the 1Gb/s speed to use some faster devices that were being held back by those older/slower but functional switches and 100mb/s ethernet ports. I first upgraded all my 100mb/s ethernet ports to 1Gb/s ethernet/USB adapters. I then installed this switch to run to my Intel PC, Sony Blue-Ray player, Sony Google TV and T-Mobile Router/Modem and still have one port left for something else. Everything else I have wants wifi. Before I was toping out about 120mb/s for my ethernet stuff. Now most of those devices are running at 300 mb/s or better. My wifi isn't using this hub but was already around 300mb/s. Now the things on ethernet and this hub are not only faster but not having issues with signal inconsistancies like I had when they were on wifi. I don't have my apartment wired for ethernet or I would use it over wifi everywhere possible. And a few of my devices will only use wifi. But in the devices and areas cabling can reach, my ethernet network speeds and reliability are much better. And connections couldn't be simpler...Just hook up each of your devices via a good quality ethernet cable. All ports detect the signal and wiring on the device and are connected to each other without any programming or software settings needed. Also you don't have to use a paticular port for your gateway connection. While some hubs/devices require a plug with a reversed wiring, this switch automatically takes care of that for you. No special cable or wiring needed. Couldn't be happier with this switch. This switch did is doing it's job well and I wholeheartedly recommend it...

This 5-port gigabit ethernet switch/hub was exactly what I needed. Purchased to use in our local church so we could receive wired internet to two laptop computers we used for audio and video editing purposes each week. They are both located in rear of sanctuary, and being so far away from main wifi routers in separate offices, they previously had spotty wifi signal at best and sometimes would simply cut out mid service, causing our Youtube livestreams to be interrupted. Now the laptops both get at least 200 Mbits download and 15-20 Mbits upload via direct wired internet to the main Spectrum switch / router using this hub. DISCLAIMER: Keep in mind even though this 5-port TP-Link hub is a gigabit hub, that only means it's capable of receiving UP TO one gigabit theoretical speeds. Real world usage typically get far less. And considering this is connected to another high speed 48-port switch some 150 feet away next to Spectrum router, which also provides direct wired internet to the Preschool and other offices in the same building, 200 Mbits download is more than adequate for our weekly livestream services, and it never drops. Its a whole lot better than the spotty 8-12Mbit WiFi signal that would occasionally drop mid service during a livestream. That said, this hub works like a charm and is very compact, easy to mount under table using zipties, very little to no heat buildup. Powered by included 120V AC adaptor. Recommended and would purchase again. Thanks Amazon and TP-Link.
