Does this device convert tapes alone, or do I still need a VHS player/camera?

You will still need a VHS player to play your tapes. This is not a VHS player. It is a video capture and recording device, designed to receive input via AV (composite) or S-Video + R/L audio.

Is it possible to enhance the playback quality?

The CHR101 does not enhance the original quality, which is dependent on your source device. Recommended Settings, go to Home → Settings → Video Bitrate → 10 Mbps Home → Settings → Recorded Resolution → AUTO Use VLC Media Player to play the file.

Why do I get only audio (no picture) when recording with the CHR101?

1. Check Input Source: AV (composite): Screen shows "CVBS"; S-Video + R/L audio: Shows "S-Video"; S-Video alone: picture only (no audio). 2. Supports only PAL/NTSC. SECAM signals will cause no picture. 3. Disable HDCP on your source device.

How to connect a VHS player with SCART output to the CHR101?

We recommend trying a SCART-to-AV adapter (Not included). This adapter includes an input/output toggle switch. Make sure the switch is set to OUTPUT so that the video and audio signals are properly sent to the PORTTA Recorder.
