It doesn't have a strong spelling component, but it can easily be added by the teacher. The words are challenging. If you have a child whose vocabulary/spelling is not strong, I would consider moving down a grade. I have my third grader (whose is a late reader and terrible speller) doing the second grade book and it's perfect.

I have homeschooled for 7 years and this is the perfect program to increase vocabulary without being monotonous. It doesn't have a strong spelling component, but it can easily be added by the teacher. The words are challenging. great basic vocabulary book
The exercises are fine for what they are; reading comprehension, cross word puzzles, sentence scrambled. The word lists are on par for the grade level. We've been using Wordly Wise for years. I bought our book used. It came crinkled up a bit but in ok shape.
