Canon PowerShot SX230 HS (12.1 MP, 14x optical zoom) black

We bought this camera to replace a SX220 which was stolen. The camera takes very good pictures and video, and is hard to fault. The improvement in sensitivity over our A700 is shocking. We have found the manual control useful, and this was the feature that made us chose this camera over the Nikon. There are two faults with the camera: The first and most serious is that it does not charge off USB, meaning one more thing to pack/lose when you go on holiday. It would have been far more sensible to offer an external charger as an optional extra. Sony, Nikon, Samsung and all the phone manufacturers have moved into the 21st century and it is about time Canon joined them. It is fair enough on the IXUS where size is an issue, but they can find the space for gimmicks like GPS on the Powershot. The second fault is a minor one, but the pets and kids mode does not really work as well as I would hope, as it allows shutter speeds to drop too low. However by selecting a 1000th of a second in shutter speed priority mode you can catch them in action.

Bought on strengh of reivew on DP review site and so far lives up to its high rating. Image quality excellent and really like to film effect colour setting. Lens seem excellent and very long zoom. Yes the pop up flash is a bit tedious but this is a very small problem. Disapointed not to be able to control the noise reduction - at least I've not yet found this in the menus - much better to do NR with software afterwards.

Well, I like this camera. True, it does seem to get through the battery very quickly, but I am still checking out all the functions so I suspect that that is what is consuming a lot of juice. The GPS works fine for me. It seems to be very accurate (within a few feet), you just have to remember to turn GPS off (and only use the required GPS functions - 'logging' inevitably will be power heavy). I found the auto pop-up flash a bit of a nuisance, until I read the instructions and realised that you could close it manually, and subsequently reopen it, without harming the camera. The control dial and associated buttons appear very sensitive and need a litle care when using them, otherwise you end up in unexpected functions. Having said that, I think it has enough functionaily to satisfy all levels of users. It will not replace my SLR but I will be able to carry it at almost all times so can be ready for those unexpected moments that always occur when you don't have a camera with you.

I bought this to use occassionally when carrying my DSLR was inconvenient, and for impromptu snapshots, but I've used it a lot more than that. I take it most places with me, the picture quality and versatility being way beyond what the phones that folks insist on using are capable of. The Zoom (eqv to ~400mm) is longer than my DSLR, and the camera cost less than a lense for ther DSLR would cost. The Image Stabilisation and Low Light performance is superb, and while i didn't buy it to take videos, of course I have done. A video I took of musicians playing in a local Pub has some peple thinking it's a Pro Video - 1080p video, clear sound and the ability to zoom and re-focus while recordiing. And of course the one-touch record, without the need to set it tio video mode first, is great. As with all Canion kit i've owned, it's well made, fits nicely in the hand and has an intuitive interface, i cant' recommend uit highly enough.

Navigating through options is not easy. For instance accidentally closing the flash does not automatically re-open when required even if in AUTO mode. This shows you the no-flash sign on screen and you have no way to change it. Only when you realize that you can manually re-open the flash you will get the options of flash re-enabled. Also there's a circular menu that comes and goes sometimes and no matter how many times I try in different ways, I never manage to get it showing on screen whenever I want it. Battery life wasn't impressive too. Approx 30 to 45 mins of use and the battery was depleted. Nothing to say about the quality of the photos and the features available..very good camera.

I researched cameras for a long time before buying this. Particularly I read loads of reviews on dpreview.com (the fount of all knowledge about cameras) and this camera rated highly So I bought it and the images are amazing. And the videos are as good as my HD camcorder! Overall there is nothing I dislike about this camera, and I do love the GPS tag that goes on all shots, saving me having to geotag my images. Recommended - a first class piece of equipment, and a perfect example of Canon genius

Nice compact camera with great picture quality. It was a present for my wife's birthday she finds it very easy to use just point and shoot and the video quality is good as well!.

This supposedly 'family friendly' point and shoot, "so easy to use you must get it for your grannie" camera produces images so grainy, smeared, toneless and colourless that you'll still be screaming at it long after your friends have snapped the shot on their Lumix and happily wandered away. Here's what Cannon had to say when I complained: "Mr Baxter, Thank you for your e-mail and for contacting Canon. My apologies for the delay in our response due to a temporary problem with our system. I am sorry to hear that you are disappointed with the results of the images from your PowerShot SX230 HS. I see that you have provided images taken in Program and AUTO mode as examples. In AUTO mode, the camera will attempt to secure an image using an exposure that will freeze any subject movement, and therefore a high ISO is sometimes the best way to achieve this. This produces grain, and when combined with the processing involved in auto mode, could have some effect on the quality of the image. A side effect of higher ISO's is a loss of colour saturation and lower contrast. As the amount of megapixels on a sensor increases, this also increases the visible noise at high ISO's. The size of the sensor in the SX230 HS is over eleven times smaller than that of an EOS 400D, hence why the clarity is greater on an EOS 400D. I appreciate that you may not want to set all of the settings manually when you use the camera, therefore as a compromise, I would recommend to use Program mode, but set the ISO manually where possible. Program mode can still of course set the exposure and white balance automatically for you. You will find that the image quality is superior in P mode as the camera does not have to perform as much processing. Please be advised that I have passed your feedback on to Canon Inc in Japan for their consideration to possibly improve the processing in AUTO mode. If you feel that the camera is unsuitable for you, I can only recommend to approach the retailer under the Sales of Goods Act 1979 for a refund or replacement camera. As the manufacturer, we can repair the product, however looking at the images, I do not feel that there is a fault as such with the camera. J'ai eu pas mal d'APN, en plus d'un reflex je cherchais un compact long zoom, je l'ai trouvé: très bonne qualité d'image, même en intérieur sans flash, stabilisation en vidéo très efficace, option canon et mode manuel complet et réel (avec un vrai iris d'obturation, pas un filtre comme sur les panasonic TZ ou les sony HXV).J'ai un S90 et je ne suis pas perdu ni déçu. Pour les point négatifs: -autonomie très faible (le dernier niveau se met en plus a clignoter assez tôt et donne l'impression que l'appareil va s'arrêter rapidement, une minuterie ou un pourcentage serait plus adéquat (j'attends le CHDK). -écran 16/9e aberrant, en photo, donc en 4/3 on se retrouve avec un écran miniature, on croirait revenir 5 ans en arrière, l'écran est très bon au demeurant. -video très bonne mais pas de shoot pendant qu'on filme et pas de mode faible luminosité (pour filmer en environnement très sombre: même mon nokia N8 le fait). -pas de dessin sur la molette de direction: on cherche toujours à quoi ça correspond -pas de mode panorama en un shoot -mode rafale inférieur à la concurrence Bilan cependant très positif car l'appareil se débrouille très bien, très compact, et long zoom efficace.

Gleich vorneweg: Ich bin keine Profifotografin und beurteile die Kamera deshalb aus der Sicht einer begeisterten Hobbyfotografin, die aber in Sachen Fotografie noch einiges lernen kann. Ich habe mir nach langem Suchen und Testen diverser Modelle (Canon SX 210, SX 220, SX 230, Panasonic Lumix DMC TZ18, Nikon Coolpix S 8200 etc.) die Canon Powershot SX 230 gekauft. Da ich zwar keine professionellen Bilder mache, aber für Fotobücher und private 'Dia-Abende' schöne und hochwertige Bilder schiessen möchte, war es für mich sehr wichtig, dass die Kamera einen möglichst großen objektiven Zoom hat, tolle Bilder zaubert aber auch in der Handhabung einfach ist. Da ich mir diverse Einstellungen noch aneignen muss, war es mir außerdem wichtig, dass es eine Autofunktion gibt, die passable Bilder macht und ich trotzdem die Möglichkeit habe, verschiedene Programme/Einstellungen selbst vornehmen zu können. Meine Wahl ist daher auf Canon Powershot SX 230 gefallen. Von Canon bin ich schon länger überzeugt. Erstens ist es in der Bedienung unschlagbar, da man sich durch wenige Handgriffe sehr viel selbst beibringen kann. Außerdem stimmt hier das Preis/Leistungsverhältnis und das ist natürlich auch ein ausschlaggebender Punkt. Da die vielen Bewertungen schon sehr detaillierte Beschreibungen der verschiedenen Funktionen, Einstellungen etc. enthalten, möchte ich hier nur noch aufzeigen, was mir besonders gut bzw. weniger gut gefällt: Negativ: - Finde ich die Platzierung des Blitzes auf der oberen Seite links. Dort habe ich seither meine Hand abgelegt um die Kamera sicher zu halten. Allerdings ging der Blitz dann nicht auf und ich musste ihn manuell aufmachen. Jetzt habe ich mich daran gewöhnt, aber vielleicht kann man dies auch anders anordnen. Positiv: - Der GPS Empfang kann problemlos ausgeschaltet werden und meine Befürchtungen, dass der Akku trotzdem schnell leer geht, waren wirklich umsonst. Ich habe die Kamera oft in meiner Handtasche dabei und muss sagen, dass der Akku wirklich ordentlich lange hält. - Die Kamera liegt sehr gut in der Hand und man kann auch mit einer Hand schnell Schnappschüsse machen ohne Angst haben zu müssen, dass die Kamera aus den Fingern rutscht. - Durch das auf der Rückseite angebrachte Rädchen kann man schnell und einfach verschiedene Modi auswählen: Programm, Auto, Manuell, Fischauge, Portrait ' es ist für jede Gelegenheit etwas passendes dabei - Wichtig war mir außerdem, dass die Bilder bei Dämmerung oder Nacht gut herauskommen. Natürlich muss man selbst ein wenig einstellen, aber auch Partyfotos und weitere Fotos bei Dunkelheit gelingen super! Die Bilder sind allgemein von super Qualität. - Auch wenn es viele hier schon geschrieben haben und ich nicht so viel wiederholen möchte: DER ZOOM IST KLASSE! Also gibt es von mir ein klares JA! Ich würde die Kamera jedem weiterempfehlen und sie mir selbst auch nochmals kaufen. Außerdem gibt es für jeden Geschmack eine Farbe und so gibt es für jedes Geschlecht ein passendes Modell!

Canon PowerShot SX230 HS Digitalkamera (12 Megapixel, 14-fach opt. Zoom, 7,6 cm (3 Zoll) Display, Full HD, GPS, bildstabilisiert) schwarz Zusammengefasst meine Punkteverteilung: Bildqualität: 5 (ohne ISO-Auto) GPS-Funktion: 2 Ich möchte in meiner (übrigens ersten) Rezension mehr auf die GPS Funktion eingehen, die ja für Canon mit diesem Modell eine Neuigkeit darstellt. Und meiner Meinung nach dabei nicht soviel richtig gut gemacht haben. Dies ist meine 5. digitale Kompaktkamera aus dem Hause Canon. Ich fotografiere nie im vollen Automatik-Modus sondern hauptsächlich in der Programmautomatik "P". Zur Bildqualität: Einwandfrei in hellen Umgebungen und bemerkenswert was sich in diesem Kamerasegment in den letzten Jahren mit hohen ISO-Zahlen getan hat. ISO 400 ist noch durchaus brauchbar und auch ISO 800 ist - wenn man nicht allzuviele dunkle Bildanteile hat - bei normaler Bildschirmauflösung noch akzeptabel. Darüber lässt es deutlich nach. Nicht optimal gelöst ist meiner Meinung nach die Tatsache, dass es neben einer manuellen ISO-Einstellung nur einen ISO-Automatik Modus gibt der sich nicht limitieren lässt ("früher" gab es ISO-Auto und ISO-High-Auto). Denn der jetzige ISO-Automatikmodus geht recht schnell auf >1000 ISO was nicht wirklich spannend aussieht. Schade dass man das nicht limitieren kann, denn das kleine Objektiv ist nicht besonders lichtstark und so muss man des Öfteren die ISO Zahl manuell verstellen wenn man wie ich die ISO-Automatik nicht will. Und nun zur GPS Funktion: Die Fa. Canon ist mit dieser Funktion nicht die Erste auf dem Markt, aber gelernt haben sie scheinbar auch nix. Positives dazu: eigentlich NIX Negatives dazu - Sehr vieles: 1. Die Cam zeichnet nur Koordinaten und Höhe auf. Sonst nix. Keine Blickrichtung. Für das, das jedes mittelmässige Handy heutzutage einen Kompass eingebaut hat ist das schwach für eine nagelneue Kamera. 2. GPS-Suchdauer für eine Schnappschuss-Cam inakzeptabel. Liegt die Kamera ein paar Minuten ausgeschaltet da, benötigt sie ca. 2min um die Satelliten wieder zu finden (freier Himmel!) Dies lässt sich u.U. umgehen wenn man sie im Tracking-Modus belässt, dann ist aber der Akku in einem halben Tag leergelutscht (lt. Handbuch) 3. Die Koordinaten werden zwar im Display im Anzeigemodus angezeigt, das wars aber auch schon. Eine Landkarte o.ä. gibt es nicht. 4. Die mitgelieferte Maps-Software von Canon kann, außer einen roten PIN auf Google Maps zu setzen wo das Bild aufgenommen wurde, nicht viel mehr (Tracks anzeigen noch). Das kann man auch in Google Earth machen. 5. Hat die Kamera Satelliten gefunden, behält sie die letzten Koordinaten auch z.B. in Räumen so lange bei und schreibt sie in nachfolgende Fotos, wie die Cam eingeschaltet bleibt. Schaltet man die Kamera ohne Empfang ein, schreibt sie auch keine Koordinaten ins Foto. Immerhin. Über die Akkulaufzeit kann ich nicht viel sagen, da die ständige Rumspielerei nicht sehr repräsentativ für die Praxistauglichkeit ist. Den Video-Modus habe ich nocht nicht probiert. Die Fotos über das von Amazon geschenkte Mini-HDMI Kabel (Sonderaktion) auf dem 40" LCD sehen auch sehr gut aus. Der beim Einschalten automatisch ausklappende Blitz bleibt drin, wenn man den Finger drauf lässt. Das manuelle Rausklappen des Blitzes ist etwas schwergängig. Der Zoom hat 2 Stufen, ist aber nicht sonderlich schnell. Mein Fazit: Von der GPS Funktion sollte man sich nicht zuviel versprechen. Wie z.B. im Urlaub, ständig die Cam aus der Tasche holen, Foto machen und wieder einstecken wird aller Voraussicht nach zu Fotos ohne Koordinaten führen da das Gerät erstmal 2min lang braucht um Satelliten zu finden. Die Bildqualität ist sehr gut, solange man sich nicht auf nur die ISO-Automatik beschränkt. Die SX220 tut es damit eigentlich auch...

A pesar de tener muchas funciones, accesorios y especificaciones técnicas no creáis que va a ser fácil de usar y que vas a tener fotografías de alta calidad siempre. Cuando la pones en modo automático no puedes forzar el flash y tienes que dejar que el software decida si quiere o no activarlo, lo que no siempre te va a servir. Por otro lado si la colocas en modo manual tiene tantas funciones, modos y posibles combinaciones de botones que tampoco te garantiza una experiencia perfecta. Por otro lado la funcionalidad del GPS es muy buena, se integra con facebook y picasa a la perfección. Y la gran mayoría de fotos tomadas al aire libre son impresionantes. La recomiendo si estás dispuesto a leerte un poco el manual y aprender cosillas de apertura foco velocidad de obturador, etc para que tengas una experiencia positiva.
