AVH-W4400NEX In Dash Multimedia Receiver with 7" WVGA Clear Resistive Touchscreen Display

I purchased the Alpine iLX-007 a few years back, and was close to content. During my relationship with the iLX, I kept yearning for something more, though. "Ugh," I thought, "where is that damned lightning cable?" I would dream of the day that wireless CarPlay would be a real thing and I wouldn't need to remove my phone and look for the cable, fumble around trying to plug it all in and then locating a suitable resting place for my phone. On top of that, the iLX was pretty damn expensive for what was basically a radio (non-HD) and a screen to display CarPlay. No CD, no HD radio, no bluetooth(?!!?), no satellite radio, and no Android Auto? This is the price you pay as an early adopter, though. THEN, "What's this? Alpine released the iLX-107 which has wireless CarPlay? Yeah, okay, I can get behind that. I'm sure they've added a few more features as well, to up their own game. What? No? It's the same damn radio as the 007, just with wireless CarPlay? They want the same exorbitant price, too?" ... so I waited. And waited. And waited... Finally, after randomly checking in on wireless CarPlay news, *BOOM*, Pioneer releases three new head units that support wireless CarPlay and so much more! Oh, so much more! Now I get HD radio, bluetooth, CD AND DVD player with a flip-down display that also shows off an SDcard slot. And I get Android Auto which is also wireless? Immediately I order new underwear. I can even customize the splash screen and background image. Wow, I get to customize the color of the physical buttons to match my OEM AC controls, too? Doesn't get much better. My only real complaint about this unit is the appearance and physical button options. I'm very much into the minimalist look with simple lines and these buttons scream early 2000 car stereos, meh. Also, why the hell don't I get dedicated skip and back buttons? I have two buttons that seemingly do the same thing and a "go back" menu button that really serves no purpose since a "go back" button is displayed throughout all the menus on the screen. Instead of a quick feel with the hand and a simple click, I have to feel for a physical button that brings up a submenu which I have to look at in order to hit the skip or back button when playing audio. Really? Despite that, I still absolutely love this head unit, and can truly appreciate CarPlay even on my short commutes. Downside - I' definitely going to be using a lot more phone data with my phone streaming music all the time now, instead of the few long drives I take where I would take the time to fumble through hooking up my phone with the old iLX-007. Must buy, especially at $540.

I installed the unit in a 2010 Subaru Forester Limited. All I needed was the Maestro MRR and SU1 harness and everything worked great. Hadn't installed a car stereo in many years, just took my time, slow and easy. Love the radio, sounds so much better than the stock Clarion unit that came with the car. Car play with iPhone is great, touchscreen responsive. I was worried that it was going to be an old unit, but was made in May 2019, already had latest firmware. All steering wheel controls work normally, microphone on drivers visor clear for phone calls and siri. Trying to love my car again, this goes along way.

great unit but after 2 years i have dust under the screen, which is perminent unless i get it repaired,or replaced ,,, so u know its not sealed like it should have been and over time dust will get in under the screen... updated :::: may 2021 Unit crapped out and is in a loop trying to reloaded its software..There's a fix but you need to open the unit and replaced the internal SD card which Pioneer does not supply you have to go on eBay or search the web for the internal cards firmware You cant just use the updated firmware from their website) ..There's a few videos on YouTube of how to repair it... I tried emailing pioneer about this problem and gave them every chance to send me a new SD card ..They gave me the runaround and I also said I will be giving my honest opinion on Amazon about pioneers practices..Here I am.. My advice about the unit stick with Kenwood.. If you do buy pioneer After the warranty is up open the unit and copy the internal SD card so you have a back up File of the firmware.. The internal SD card is very cheaply made No surprising it didn't last long.. I will never buy a pioneer again customer service is nonexistent and they do not stand by their brand remember.... this is this a software issue Very easy for them to post the actual correct software to put up on their website to help people that are dealing with this problem ....they chose not to help me.. I Used the unit Once a week for about 2 1/2 years

Oh my, how I love this unit, I've had it for a couple of weeks now and it's just GREAT! The wireless Android Auto works flawlessly on Samsung A51 and A71. It's not as great on Redmi devices, but you can expect this. The screen mirroring feature simply takes the car to another level, making it possible to control the cell phone from the head unit screen and watch videos on Youtube and Netflix. There is also no need for a bypass. Just connect the parking cable (the light g reen one) to the negative, and after you have the unit on, press the bottom left corner of the screen for a few seconds (15 I think) and you will see a message on the screen that says "Set on" and that's it! The only thing I miss from my previous kenwood, is that it automatically turns on the front camera when you shift back from reverse. On this unit you have to turn on "Camera View Mode" on the unit to have this feature, which is totally uncomfortable when parking (although the backup camera obviously turns on when you put it in reverse if it has been installed correctly). All in all, it's a great sounding unit with great sound and a lot of features with a detachable screen.

I have had this unit in my car for 6 years now, with the SD card failed about a year ago. The unit still worked with the bad SD card, but it wouldn't save the last station listened to or changes to preset stations and settings after restarting the car, hence a drop in a star from an otherwise great, but pricy head unit. This stereo itself and touchscreen work great, and other than the SD card issue, has worked perfectly. It connects automatically to my iPhone and CarPlay works flawlessly. HD radio works great and video and MP3 playback from USB or SD card (who does THAT anymore?) works perfectly. XM radio with the optional XM tuner works fantastic and even has a pause music function. Optional backup camera works great. I added new stereo controls using the Metra ASWC and that works great too. Everything works great! Except of course the flawed SD card. It was surprisingly easy to change the bad SD card. Without removing the unit from my dash, I carefully enlarged the slot in the plastic below the existing SD card slot so I could access the failed card. There are some videos on YouTube how to do it and what it looks like, but it was way easier than I thought, and only took 5 minutes with a $20 rotary tool from Amazon. I wish I had replaced it a year ago when it went bad! I replaced it with a new SD card from a guy on eBay for $45. It has the latest firmware and now the stereo works like new! Bad design by Pioneer but won't be a problem moving forward now that I can get to it easily.

First of all, this is an expensive unit so I would like to have all the features working flawlessly. That being said, I have so many frustrations after installing this unit I am almost quiting to fix them all. 1) The wireless Android Auto feature does not work unless you have a pure Android phone (Pixel or Nexus), which means, Samsung and LG won't even pair (mine is Samsung btw). This is unacceptable! How they release a new model without being sure the 2 most popular Android brands won't work? I can't tell about Apple Car though. 2) Don't even try the bypass hacks spread all over the internet, none of them work. Microbypass, ground green wire, etc. By the moment you start moving the GPS will tell you are not in parking position and it will block your video. 3) There is no parking assist. Overall I am soooo disappointed with my first Pioneer unit I feel no pleasure on having it already. I wish I had researched more deeply before buying it... UPDATE: 12/27/2018 After updating the firmware to version 1.01 I could fix issue #2. This changed the bad image I had about the product, however still the wireless Android Auto won't work. I gave it 2 more stars anyway. UPDATE 06/13/2019 The Android Auto via USB cable sometimes gets disconnected. Once in a while (like every 5 connections, 1 fails) it gets disconnected from no reason, sometimes I don't even get to connect it. Like I said, if the wireless connection was available for my phone maybe it would be the way to go. The USB connection is not flawless, so, not yet Pioneer. UPDATE 04/08/2020 Now, after 1.5 year of use, my unit does not boot anymore. It starts with the loading screen, then keeps rebooting. Already tried to reset the unit, disconnect the 12V cable, but so far it keeps reboot. I am not sure if it is a ROM problem, detachable face connection, or something else. Overall I have never had a car stereo that broke with less then 2 years. Disappointing.

This unit works flawlessly as an aftermarket replacement in my Subaru Forester 2015. I replaced the stock non-nav head unit, so cannot really comment on whether it is worth the upgrade from some more recent models. But, for what it's worth, the reasons I chose the 4400 on paper were: - vs higher end 8400 series: Didn't need built-in navigation since I always use my phone. - vs older generation 4200: Wireless connectivity. Also, single usb cable wired connectivity (for ALL of CarPlay, Android Auto, and AppRadio) is nice because it frees up the HDMI and USB2 ports for other uses. - vs lower end 2400: Wanted HDMI input. Wireless CarPlay connects automatically within a few seconds of power on, and works smoothly. This feature will be even nicer when I upgrade to an iPhone 8 or similar and can install a wireless Qi charging coil in the center console tray. iDataLink Maestro RR works perfectly for the steering wheel controls and gauges. Factory rear view camera integrates perfectly. Wiring harness and parking brake bypass from previous generations also work fine. My biggest surprise, after reading a lot of negative online comments, is that the AppRadio mode works surprisingly well (as a workaround at least until proper waze support is added to CarPlay in iOS 12). I can have waze navigation displayed on the screen, podcasts playing on the audio, still hear navigation prompts, and still have access to Siri voice control for sending SMS, checking sports scores, etc.. I have used both iOS 11.4 and 12 beta. My only complaints at all are with Apple, not Pioneer: 1) iOS uses the proprietary AirPlay protocol for mirroring/casting and does not work with the more widely adopted miracast receiver built into this unit (workaround is to use the Apple Lightning Digital AV Adapter to HDMI input). 2) CarPlay severely limits the number of apps that are available vs Android Auto, but at least Waze support (the main one I need) is coming in iOS 12. If I had an Android phone it would be perfect!

Love this thing. Replaced my stock unit in my 2015 Subaru BRZ. I bought this unit from Pioneer for the wireless Apple Carplay. At the time of purchase (10/7/2018), there were only two units on the market with wireless Apple Carplay. This pioneer model (The 4400NEX, 6400NEX, and 8400NEX) and the Alpine ILX-107. The Alpine came out first, but doesn't have a lot of the functionality that this one does. The Alpine doesn't have a CD player (if that matters to you anymore...), it doesn't have HD radio, it isn't satellite radio ready, and above everything else, the Alpine DOES NOT LET YOU USE BLUETOOTH TO STREAM MUSIC! Yes, they were first to market with wireless Apple Carplay, but Pioneer hit this one out of the park in terms of execution. The unit is very fast. It works great. It does exactly what you want it to do. The only gripe that some people have made is that it removes the lines from your backup camera. Not a huge deal for me as those lines never meant that much to me in the first place. Pioneer may fix that in a future firmware update. Very customizable. You can change the background to any picture you want, the startup screen (same), and even the LED lights on the control buttons. 10/10, would buy again.
