Cord Storage Reel w/Stand

I bought this cord reel to manage a 100' 12-3 gauge extension cord. Based upon other reviews, I knew it was a risk that the cord might not fit, but took a chance and I'm glad I did so. A 12-3 cord is HEAVY and hard to manage, and there aren't a lot of reasonably priced solutions out there for that purpose.Like some other users, I found the center of my cord and worked it under the clip on the spool of the reel. Then, after stretching out the remaining cord down the length of my driveway, it becomes very simple to neatly wind the cord onto the reel. It's a perfect fit, by the way. Most of the time when I used the cord (with my electric lawn mower) I have to unwind the entire cord, but in some instances where I need less than the full length, I find I can unwind only the portion I need, exposing both the plug and receptacle ends of the cord simultaneously. That's a HUGE help. Thank you to the other reviewers who made this suggestion... it's the recommendation that makes this solution viable.

Have had 2 off these for 10 years, haven't broke yet, great build quality, easy to roll cord back up. Does take up some space tho

This is a very basic reel. It arrived fully assembled. It felt flimsy until I loaded it. Doesn't turn easily. It is not self winding. My 100 foot heavy gauge outdoor cord fit on the reel. There are no instructions and, if you just start at one end of your cord and roll it up, that is self-defeating because you will have to wind your entire cord in order to plug it in. You need to roll it a special way so that it will spool out only as much as you need. There are videos on YouTube that show how. Also, there is a clip on the spindle to help your roll. The clip didn't work with my heavy-gauge cord oh, it was too small, so I tied the middle of my cord to the spool in an overhand knot before I started to roll.

I bought this for my "US Wire 74100 12/3 100-Feet SJTW " extension cord and probably missed the part in the description where the "gauge" limits are stated because the reel was fairly overwhelmed by this extension cord. Perhaps a lighter cord would have been fine, but my reel is practically full with just 100ft of cord, and it's supposed to take 150ft so, again, maybe there is a gauge limitation and I exceeded it.The build is OK for the price and, depending on how you want to use it, it can work very well. I wanted to use it such that I would plug the extension cord, and carry the reel with me all the way to the usage point. To accomplish this, I began the reel by holding the female end of the extension cord at the outer diameter of the reel, and reeling the cable around it through as any turns as it took. As you may imagine, allowing the female end to always be at the outer diameter ends up "stealing" one cable's width worth through the entire radius of the reel. That probably contributed to running out of reel on 100ft of extension cable, and the 12 gauge did the rest.Bottom line: it's an affordable reel, good for thinner extension cords (probably 16gauge or higher)

I give this extension cord reel five stars because it does what I need it to do and no signs of wear or tear after a bit of use. This extension cord holder is quality made to last. It can hold 100 feet of 16/3 vinyl outdoor cord with room to spare. I have not put another cord on this reel. I have rolled and unrolled the extension cord many times. I've moved the reel from place to place numerous times as well. This little extension cord holder continues to look and work as nice as the day I received it from Amazon.I haven't tried using the extension cord while leaving one end attached to the reel. For me it is just easier to unwind the cord and lay the cord out in the general area I am going to use it. I use this particular extension cord for my electric tiller. I normally put any extra length in a big circle on the ground and just pull more cord as I move further from where I plug the cord in. This little system works fine for me.I could get by with a little less expensive cord storage device as that is the basic use I have it for. It was not expensive, has a large handle to grab and go and a solid bottom to sit on the shelf when I'm not using the extension cord. All in all, it is exactly what works well for me to keep my extension cord safely put up when not in use. The large round sides protect the cord from banging against other things while in transport. This reel also makes getting to and using the extension cord very handy as well.For the price, protection of extension cord, and ease of use I would buy as many of these as I have outdoor use extension cords and would recommend this quality built item.Edit: I wanted to add that if you start with your extension cord hooked on the hook on the spindle at the middle of the extension cord and then winding up both ends at the same time allows you to unroll what you need, then easily roll the cord back up when finished. I changed my cord over to this system to give it a try. I don't think 100 feet is much of a bother, but every little bit of convenience can help. Either way, starting with the middle of the extension cord or just starting with one end and winding it up until the whole cord is on the reel are very workable solutions that keep the cord untangled for ease of use and ease of storing. A nice little product for a nice little price.

This is the second reel I've purchased as the first one works so well for keeping long cords untangled. It's a bit on the floppy side but is quite durable and the price is right.
