I want to swap out the internals in my 2001 4l60e with 4l65e internals. will this book help?

The main improvement of interest is the 4L65E's five-pinion planetary carrier that replaced the 4L60E's four-pinion and the three four gear clutches wear improved. Most info in the book should be helpful.

Is book independent of the original atsg 4l60e manual? or, is this a supplement?

Yes and it is a supplement, without the supplement you can not find replacement transmission if yours is beyond rebuilding. you must know the spacer plate letter sequence to buy the correct kit for you specific vehicle as the transmission is used in many applications and each has its specific spacer plate for the vehicle it is installed in. Also a 1995 transmission assembly can only be used in the appropriate 1995 vehicle as it is a stand alone year. If you were to purchase a 4L60E in the old 700R4 case with the bottom of the starter ring open from a re-builder and he did not warrant it for your vehicle and you installed it yourself you will mess with the computer.
