The Milling Machine for Home Machinists (Fox Chapel Publishing) Machinist Handbook to Choosing, Installing, and Operating a Milling Machine in Your Home Workshop - 150+ Photos and Diagrams Review: Great Information to Get Started in Machining - This is a great book to get if you are thinking of getting into machining either as a hobby or even as a career as it has loads of informative photos as well as descriptions regarding the limitations of certain machines. Good to reference as well as there are special items that one forgets about because they are not used daily. Review: Judge this book by its cover, not its size. - It is a book for the home machinist; just as the title states. Fortunately, I did not buy a mill before having a chance to read this book, which is the target audience. It guided me through some of the ins and outs of having various size machines before making a purchase. The best part would probably be the tooling recommendations. This will help quite a few decide what is necessary instead of what is convenient and and in some cases what tooling materials to avoid depending on what machine capabilities you have. I would recommend this to anyone from a total noob *using Google-fu to fill in the blanks; to an intermediate home machinists. Professionals might find some of the appendix helpful for tool geometries but any good machinist handbook will already contain this content. Good read. Mostly to the point. Nice size (especially for light reading while traveling), well printed and very well illustrated.

Not the "be all and end all' by any means; but worth a read
This book does its best to cover every aspect of using the milling machine that might be faced by the novice machinist; whether hobbyist or budding professional and would be a good first read for someone thinking about purchasing a mill but not sure about the size machine to select.. It is certainly worth the price.

Very elementary but gets better
This is a revision to a review I submitted earlier (below). After I read farther into the book I found the info I wanted. This book is actually very good for the home/newer machinist. You have to get past the beginning where it talks about buying and setting up a mill (that part looks like it was written for the person with ZERO experience). Original review - I wanted a book on how to set up and run a milling machine. (I have a Smithy combination machine). This book is more about what milling machines do and how to select a milling machine. Not what I was looking for. The book is fine for what it does but not what I wanted.

I bought this because it's supposed to have instructions for building a certain jig.
I bought this because it's supposed to have instructions for building a certain jig that I thought was in Tool and Cutter Sharpening but wasn't. That book said it was in this book. The tool I was looking for was "Advanced Grinding Rest." And guess what? It wasn't. While this book has some information in it that will help someone just starting out in machining it wasn't what I needed. I think this would help a beginner a lot but I gave it 3 stars because I was misled by what book the jig instructions were in. I almost ordered the wrong book again until I went to the authors web site and was able to determine what book it was in.

Understandable
With few exceptions the author does not assume prior knowledge. When he does he refers to the source and chapter to gain the potential lack of knowledge. The use of pictures and diagrams also enhanced understanding for those of us that depend on visual reference. It is a good source for the amateur that has a craftsman bent.

This has been a useful guide to hobbyist machining. A good start for improving my skills in my hobby workshop.
