This book is great - I took high school German for all four years, plus a semester in college a LONG time ago, and I kind of wanted to test myself with this book. It's so easy to learn from and boy do I wish I had something like this book in school. We just had boring textbooks, not like this book which gets to the point fast and really helps you learn. I am still terrible with grammar, however, so I read that section a little more slowly. I loved the inclusion of the short stories to read in the back of the book and entertained those in my household while reading aloud in German while also testing myself on the translation. 5 stars!

I am multilingual and have studied multiple languages. This is legit the least beginner-friendly book I've used for any language, but I am getting useful stuff out of it. So, for reference, I already understand a lot of German words, but wanted to actually learn the grammar and structure before going to Germany later this year. This looked like a good basic guide. And it is, with a big caveat: it really is very poor at explaining the grammar concepts if you don't already know them. Don't know what the dative or genitive constructions are? Good luck figuring it out because it's not explained. Same with multiple other grammar concepts. Don't know what the imperfect tense is? Or the difference between imperfect and perfect? It's never really explained, so good luck to you! Go look it up somewhere else. There is also not a handy vocabulary list with each chapter, which has been pretty stardard for every other language book I've used. Which is fine, because you can look up vocab online now pretty easily, but it still seems like an oversight. So this book really is NOT great for an absolute beginner language learner, but it's working pretty well for me now that I am using it as an adjunct to another German language program; and have a copy of 501 German Verbs for reference; AND have access to "German to English translation" online to look up vocabulary. And, that said, this book has good points in that it contains some good translation exercises in the back; and a great section on everyday German phrases that you might need; and the examples it uses feel like what you would really use on the ground in Germany in real situations, rather than the "Die Eule ist sehr nett" imbecility of beginner Duolingo lessons. If you're comfortable learning stuff independently and just need a guide, this is okay.

I already speak German but wanted to brush up a bit since I live in the US and don't speak it regularly. I loved how this book walks you through grammar and pronunciation with really great examples. It's a little harder to learn a language when you can't hear it but this book does a great job of really explaining and giving useful examples. I especially like that it includes short stories in German, with the English translation. That's such a great idea! Overall, I really liked this approach and think they did a really good job.

I got this book as a total beginner in German and I actually liked it more than I expected. It’s simple and easy to follow, not confusing like other books I tried. I liked that it’s not just grammar, but also phrases and short stories, so you can actually understand and use the language a bit.
