The Astute-class is the largest, most advanced and most powerful attack submarine ever operated by the Royal Navy, combining world-leading sensors, design and weaponry in a versatile vessel. The submarines are nuclear-propelled and fuelled by a nuclear reactor powerful enough to supply a city the size of Southampton. Its advanced technology means the submarines will never need to be refuelled. They employ the latest technology such as the Sonar 2076 that detects the sound of enemy submarines using the largest number of hydrophones ever fitted to a submarine. Linked with powerful onboard electronics these provide the submarines with outstanding sensitivity. The Astute submarines are armed with the latest versions of Spearfish heavy-weight torpedoes and Tomahawk land-attack cruise missiles. Review: stunning manual ... - i have a dozen of these manuals from years gone by dealing with my cars / vans / jeeps / motorcycles ... they are all dog-eared and oil-stained - i guess this one will stay clean . This is a fantastic read , a stunning collection of information and diagrams with incredible photographs too . Haynes have done something amazing here as i now have six new manuals of theirs looking at different subjects ... all are fantastic and i hope to get the Moon manual for christmas ... superb books and some are so cheap it would be simply rude not to get them ... check out the range and prepare to be enthralled as i have been Review: Run silent, run deep. - Fascinating insight into the tortuous requirements and politics which went into the gestation of these hugely impressive vessels. The text is quite dry and acronym-heavy, but don't be put off - it's informative, interesting, and the illustrations are first-rate.

Long-awaited and generally a very worthwhile volume
The wait for publication is over. Of course it’s not a workshop manual, and indeed with the secrecy surrounding submarines, that’s hardly surprising. However, a book on a current class of submarine has to be worthy of consideration, and this is. It’s a good peek into the very secretive world of modern submarine warfare. I think reviews will depend very much on the reviewer's subject knowledge. The book provides a pretty thorough type history and a nice round-up of the political and Company moves that led to the current arrangements surrounding the Astute-class boats. The history and general design of the boat is nicely covered, although Dr Gates is rather gushing at times, and some things are a bit at odds with what you might read in our similarly biased (the other way) newspapers. Operations are fairly well covered, too. Now, it may be me, but is it obvious that Dr Gates is a surface ships man? I do have all the other books of his listed on Amazon-and have enjoyed them and found them very useful. Sometimes, I’m not sure. Certainly, while he would appear to have had considerable co-operation from BAE Systems, there are aspects of the book that are a bit journalistic, that don’t really fit. And in some sections there are some errors, though again with the secrecy that surrounds submarine operations, I can’t be too worried about it. Given the potential for sourcing information, it’s easy to see how these would come about. There are, unfortunately, quite a number of errors in captioning of the well-prepared illustrations. In at least one case, the numbered captions belong clearly to another illustration. Also, a number of illustrations are repeated, or almost so, in a way that could have been covered with fewer. Still, many of the illustrations and system diagrams are very nicely prepared by the author and most of the information is up to the task. Some of the photos showed new detail-to me- for published work on UK subs, so that side is good. However, as noted earlier, there are some errors that I’m happy not to correct given the subject matter. To be fair, there is a disclaimer up front. Submarine warfare is one of the most secretive areas there is, so sometimes we should be happy with what we get. Scoring a book like this is a little difficult. If it were on a subject where data is readily available, then I think it might creep down to a mean two stars because of the errors, and would probably not exceed three. However, it’s on an in-service nuclear boat, giving us a perhaps unprecedented level of detail, so maybe its mistakes can be forgiven, and I will give it four stars, since I do like it.

... illustrations and the insights on modern submarine warfare are amazing and unbelievable
Another stunner from Haynes - the level and quality of diagrams and illustrations and the insights on modern submarine warfare are amazing and unbelievable . A few errors have crept in the captions etc but this is a must buy and a Workshop Manual in the true sense - recommend to anyone with an interest on the subject .

Amazingly Well Done ..
Premium quality paper and graphics. If you have anything more than a passing interest in submarines, then this book should be in your collection. I ordered it here on Amazon from a U.K. bookseller, and it actually shipped to Cali from Sweden, as there were none to be found here in the States. FIVE Stars.

I really like this book. I like to compare it to the Haynes u boat title to see how much submarine technology has evolved.

Fantastic
My husband is a kid of the generation that grew up buying car manuals to work on junkers and as a career Submariner found this fantastically amusing ... great purchase =)
