How do you back up the whole laptop in one go?

You should follow Microsoft's instructions on backing up your PC: https://support.microsoft.com/en-gb/help/17127/windows-back-up-restore

Does this hard drive need a separate power supply

No it doesn't require a desperate power supply. Power is drawn through the USB connection cable when connected to your computer or if connecting to your TV (if your TV supports USB connection for recording or playing out of photos or video files as does my Samsung TV). I hope this answers your question.

'my device' isnt shown on transcend elite when i have the hard drive plugged in. how do i upload files onto the drive due to this?

Method #1: Connect to a Different Port. Method #2: Initialize the Drive. Method #3: Run a Troubleshooter. Method #4: Update or Reinstall Your Drivers. Method #5: Disable USB Selective Suspend. Method #6: Add or Change the Drive Letter. Make sure your are not putting the usb3 into a usb2 port

does it need the installation?

No, it only needs to be connected to the computer USB port 2.0.or 3.0 (blue) and it will be found as another drive in Windows 7 or 10.
