Perfect for Keeping Compostable Items Out of Your Trash
I was a bit concerned about this being too big, but I was wrong. It's incredible how much food waste accumulates in a week. Apple cores, grape vines, melon rind, avocado pits, chicken bones, egg shells, coffee grounds...well you get the idea. Originally, when my garbage company informed me that I needed to begin separating compostable items and combining them with green waste, I panicked. How would I store all the compostable materials until garbage day? There isn't enough room in the fridge to store it, and in the freezer I would forget about it. I didn't want it on the counter either, gross! It would stink, right? Ugh. And with the wildlife in the area, would it attract them to the bins? Do bears even like onions? I never had to worry about that as our garbage was in bags!!! Now I imagined the green waste bin full of leaves and compostable items, cooking in the sun (stinky) and attracting raccoons and bears to enjoy our leftovers. Then I stumbled across this Genie compost bin. It's perfect and is a welcome addition to the kitchen. You may be surprised once you start to use it and appreciate the capacity. As I noted above, once you start thinking about how much food waste you have, you'll see that the size is ideal. There are several features I like: 1. the step to open feature, hands free access so you don't need to touch it to open. 2. There is a slot on the underside of the lid for a filter - even with onions and several days of fermenting, it contains the stink well. 3. Easy to replace the bag after you empty it - if you use the branded bags! Bonus, the bags are compost friendly. 4. The top that covers the bag anchors is easily removable when you need to wash it. So glad I found this! If I could make improvements, I would have loved for this to be available in all stainless steel and to have rubber feet so it's less prone to movement.

Don’t recommend, bought Reencle to replace it. Needs some work, as a whole.
2nd UPDATE: Wish I could give no stars. Stopped using it & bought a Reenckle. Much better composter & WAY less mess! UPDATED: Lowered from 3 stars to 1 star. In theory, great product & accessories. In reality…not so much. The bags disintegrate way too fast for a 2 person household. Went to take the bag out to start my first compost & as I lifted the bag out of the Compost Genie, EVERYTHING fell into a catch tray at the bottom that didn’t catch even a quarter of the mess! It was easy to clean the unit. But had to be outside with a hose, then mop up my floor (which I do NOT want to do every time it’s emptied)! The air freshener pack did the job. We never smelled a thing! However, we did still get gnats…not good. We moved it outside, but would not buy again.

Nice overall design but bags could be better!
I've had this compost bin for about a month now and so far its been great. It's a huge upgrade from the small bucket-style bin that I had before. Pros: - Large capacity (don't have to empty as often) - No bucket to clean - Hands-free open and close with peddle on bottom - Doesn't smell Cons: - Bags tend to leak when emptying. If very full they sometimes even tear completely. Be careful or double bag!

Great product
I like the fact that this compost bin makes it very easy to replace the bags. I also like that it is large enough that it does not have to be emptied every day. In addition, I like the fact that it is hands free and has carbon filters for odorless composting.

Wonky foot pedal
I like the Compost Genie but the foot pedal keeps jamming and not opening the lid. Not sure if I just got a defective one, as none of the other reviews mention this problem. Compost bags are sturdy and allow me to take compost out once a week or so, compared to other bags I used with my old compost bin that disintegrated within a few days. Might try a replacement to see if new bin still has issues.

Empty it often!!!
I was really excited about this compost bin as I was tired of using a bucket and lid that was disgusting to empty. However, being a single person, I evidently don't have enough scraps to empty this often enough. When I went to pull out the bag to put in my compost pile, the bottom broke through and the mess went everywhere! I love the idea of compostable bags but keep in mind you need to empty this often so the bag isn't deteriorating while still in the bin. Also, the kid doesn't really seal tightly, so there is still the compost smell around the bin. I definitely wouldn't keep this bin indoors for the odor and all the bugs that come with composting. I would not buy this product again. Even if my bucket and screw lid was a gross mess to clean out, it was tightly sealed, keeping the odor and bugs in and I didn't have to empty it very often.

Stylish, Functional, and Truly Odor-Free!
💡 Quick Overview: The Compost Genie is the perfect solution for anyone looking to manage kitchen scraps without the mess or smell. With its sleek stainless-steel design and large capacity, it blends seamlessly into my kitchen while keeping odors at bay. A must-have for eco-conscious households or in our case, the city now requires we separate our compost from trash. 🔥 What I Loved: Sleek and Durable Design: The stainless-steel construction not only looks great on my countertop but is also sturdy and resistant to rust and stains. Odor Control: The built-in charcoal filter works wonders. Even with food scraps sitting in the bin for days, I couldn’t detect any unpleasant smells. Large Capacity: At 3.6 gallons, it holds more than enough for several days of kitchen waste, which means fewer trips to the compost pile. Easy to Clean: The smooth interior and removable lid make cleaning a breeze. No leftover residue or lingering smells after washing. ⚠️ What Could Be Better: Replacement Bags: While the included eco bags are great, you may want to use cheaper bags as the Genie bags are pricier than others. 📊 My Ratings: Design: ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ Odor Control: ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ Capacity: ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ Ease of Cleaning: ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ 💡 Final Verdict: The Compost Genie combines style and functionality perfectly. It’s an excellent addition to any kitchen, whether you’re a composting pro or just starting. The odor control and large capacity make it stand out from other bins I’ve used. If you’re serious about reducing waste while keeping your kitchen fresh, this is worth every penny.

Don't buy this - the design is terrible
I really wanted to like this compost bin, or rather my wife really wanted me to like it, since she hates the simple plastic container under the counter I've been using for years - she says it stinks. But this product's design is horrible. I gave it several tries, thinking I was perhaps doing something wrong, like overfilling it. They claim it holds 3.6 gallons, up to 15 pounds of compost, but that is certainly not the case. When the bag gets a little full it bulges, and when you try to lift it out it rips open, dumping the compost into the bottom, and filling the "juice" tray. When that happens it also spills juice all over the rest of the bag roll in the bottom, ruining them - this happened to me twice. To make matters worse, you have to drag it outside, dump the spilled compost and THEN you have to reach down inside, grab the juice tray and lift it up. This is where I came to really HATE the product designer - the juice tray won't lift through the top hole, you have to tilt it to get it out, so guess what, it dumps juice all over the inside (and I learned this the hard way the first time, in my kitchen!). Once you get it out you have to disassemble the top and dump what little juice remains in the tray. At which point you're lucky if you haven't vomited. Now, I admit the first time I probably waited too long to empty the bag, having assumed their claims were accurate. So, the second time I was careful to (try to) empty it after just a week, when I didn't think it was overfull. As I lifted the bag through the undersized opening the side ripped out, dumping the contents all inside. And of course I left a trail of juice from the kitchen out the front door as I took it outside to clean up the mess. I hosed it off and left it on the back porch to air out, went back to my good old plastic container with a lid. I tried to return it, after about 6 weeks, but the Amazon site referred me to Compost Genie, who pointed me back to Amazon, so I'm in a do-loop at the moment, and none too happy. Do yourself a favor, avoid this product at all cost. The product designer needs to actually have to live with it, and clean up the mess he/she creates.

Finally a compost bin that actually controls odours!
I’ve been using the Compost Genie floor-standing model for a few weeks now, and it’s a game-changer for kitchen composting. The hands-free pedal makes it super convenient when your hands are full, and the carbon filter holder really helps keep smells under control. What I like most is the bag system—it keeps food scraps from touching the bin walls, so there’s way less moisture buildup (and no gross cleanup). The airflow design seems to make a big difference too. The size is perfect for a busy household, and the build feels sturdy without taking up too much space. If you’ve struggled with odors, bugs, or messy bins, this is worth considering. It’s not the cheapest option, but the functionality and cleanliness make it well worth it.

Awesome product
Got it in silver. It’s a sleek design that goes with our simple human garbage can. I like that the bags are larger than normal (only have to change it once a week bs daily), and they aren’t priced badly. So far it hasn’t smelled and the lid closes tight so no bugs so far. Only issue is the lid stays up if you push on the foot peddle too hard. Solved this by putting a strip of foam tape on the underside of the peddle but this should be re-designed

Saves time and mess, right? Think again!
If you think this compost bin will save you time, mess, and smells, think again. The honeymoon period lasts until you need to take out your first full bag of compost. Ah, I thought, tears in the bag - must be from where the extremely adhesive sticker (that ties the bundle of included bags) was removed. Oh well, by some miracle the food remained in the torn bag, for the most part. Except it happened again, and again, and again. Every single bag in the bundle is riddled with tears, letting decomposing juices flow out of the bag and into the conveniently located drain bin at the bottom. But is this a brilliant design decision? After all, the drain bin is too large to be removed from the bin without turning it on its side. But at least you can use another brand of bags, right? Not so fast - there is a narrow circular opening at the top of the larger rectangular bin - only the expensive Genie bags have the right dimensions to avoid becoming impossible to remove (but even that, they still fail at, requiring a lot of careful manipulation to get the filled bag through the opening; again, this is a disturbing process as one is concerned that the decomposing food will spill out of the many slits and holes in their low quality bags). Avoid at all costs. This is worse than a poor product, it is misery and frustration in a box.

Wow. This is the BEST kitchen compost bin I ever had.
For years we ‘ve been looking for a compost bin that would meet the needs of a family of 4. No more small, sticky and smelly counter bin that gets full every day. We’ve also used a hanging bin for a while, but that was also a disaster with the bags slipping through, and the food scraps leaking in the bottom. Managing the cabinet door and opening the lid each time was also frustrating since your hands are always full. The Compost Genie has a foot pedal making it so easy to scrape waste from a plate or a cutting board. The bags are also the best we’ve used. Large, solid, no leaks…. I used to have to run outside to drop the bags in our municipal compost bin…hoping it wouldn’t leak all over the floors. Now, I am not going out as often because the bags hold so much, and second the Compost Genie bags are so sturdy, that I am not worried about leaks. I am so pleased with this new compost bin, it looks great, makes composting easier for everyone in the family and with the carbon filter we really can’t smell anything.

A good option for composting
Managing compost for a full week is a daunting task but this system does make it easier. The container is convenient with enough capacity to manage a full week’s worth of food scraps. Surprisingly, no odour escapes when the lid is opened. Most important is that the bags themselves are strong, biodegradable and easily removed from the bin. Extra bags are also reasonably priced on Amazon. I took 1 star off because there is a small design flaw, the foot lever petal jambs often so the lid won’t open which is a pain. My fix which has worked so far is to shake the can so the bottom drip tray sets back into place. BTW the drip tray is always empty so the bags don’t leak. It’s worth the splurge if you are an avid composter.
