BLACK LACE (S. nigra 'Eva ppaf) Perhaps the coolest new plant ever developed this new Sambucus looks more like a Japanese maple or a Cimicifuga but a whole lot easier grow. Just imagine what you could do with that lacy, intense purple-black foliage! The unique texture and color provide season long interest. It gets even better. Massive clusters of pink flowers cover the plant in midsummer and emit a light lemon fragrance. What a contrast to the leaves! Use it as a shrub, as a bold perennial or train it into a small tree. It's colorful, versatile and easy to grow. Its intriguing dark foliage is finely cut like that of Japanese maple. But Black Lace is adaptable to most growing conditions and hardy all the way to Zone 4, making it a better choice than Japanese maple for many areas. Plant it in the perennial border or use it as a dramatic accent in the general landscape. Measurements are approximate. Review: HEALTHY Plant Purchase: Black Lace Elderberry - Arrived in beautiful condition. I repotted in a very large pot for my patio, along with an older, and gallon sized, Black Lace Elderberry someone else had gifted me. It's foliage is green still, and will stay that way for a while, unless it gets more sun in a part sun, part shade location, but it's extremely healthy. So happy with my two recent plant purchases from Hirt's (see my Beyond Pink'd review), a small business plant nursery, that I bought another one from them today: a Venus Fly Trap plant. Can hardly wait to receive it! RECOMMEND Review: Great potential - Healthy little elderberry plant. Is dong great so far after a month of watering every other day (drought)

Black Lace & Pink Pony - lovely
I could feel the love and care that was put into packaging this plant. I ordered two together because they needed a pair and they were put together in the box but still separately wrapped. I was very impressed both with the packaging and the state of both plants. They looked healthy and ready for the ground, and plenty of happy leaves already. There was very little stress shown and it was very easy to plant immediately. My only complaint would be the shipping carrier they chose, it could be my local usps themselves but they left live plants in my mailbox? I was lucky to be home and see this at the time so I got them out quickly, but they would have baked alive if I wasn't able to. Considering I had to pay extra for the shipping I was expecting a little more care in that regard, but I understand the seller can't control what shippers do.

Beautiful leaves with impressive pink flowers.
My little plant arrived on time and hasn't stopped growing. I look forward to it becoming a real show stopper in the yard by the end of fall. I can't wait for the pink flowers!

Plant is not thriving at all in my garden
Planted this immediately upon receipt in an area that receives 5-6 hours of direct sunlight per day and shade in the evenings. It has been well-watered in amended, well-weeded soil and mulched and yet it has not grown more than an inch in the almost 2 months I've had it. I will say the plant was promptly shipped, well packaged and appeared to be in reasonably good health at un-boxing, however this particular plant, somewhat surprisingly, is not doing well for me (in zone 7).
