Earthwise LSW70021 21-Inch Width Leaf & Grass Push Lawn Sweeper, Black

I was - like many - a little skeptical when I seen this product, but decided to give it a try. Some context: I do have a full household of the sleep-all-day / turn-up-half-way-through-any-chore-and-offer-help adolescents, so its difficult to get help when it comes to things like raking and collecting leaves. I own two leaf blowers, a battery powered over the shoulder type as well as a B&D leaf hog. Both work well if you want to blow leaves into a big pile, or suck and mulch into a trash can (assuming you have the attachment). However: - if you're blowing leaves into piles you still have to scoop them into the trashbags, try getting that going on a slightly windy day. - if you're blowing leaves then mulching into a trash bag, on a dry day you'll get a LOT of dust from the shredding. So they kind of work, but they still have their disadvantages. The target yard is just over half an acre all told. One tree out front, three out back. All of course shedding leaves at slightly different times. I'll say 'average'. The lawn sweeper is easy enough to put together, some areas aren't too clear but nothing i couldn't work around. It does have a stopper on the front for raising and lowering the brush height, you might need to play with this a little to get what works for you. You can also play with the brush height a little as you push it round the yard to get the optimal height for scooping up the leaves. So I tried this on a lawn with a scattering of leaves, does work but it will pick up most leaves, but not all. Where it really comes into its own is with a denser coverage. However on really dense coverage you're likely to have to run a rake through to loosen up the leaves a little first. See the pictures for an idea of its effectiveness. It does fill up quite quickly and you'll find yourself reaching in to compress the leaves while you're going. One pass of the yard was enough to fill up the collection bag, but you're going to be stopping where the coverage gets denser, compressing the leaves, backtracking and pushing on. (I much prefer this minor inconvenience to stooping over and collecting leaves with a scoop) NOTE FOR MANUFACTURERS: a helpful design improvement for the collection bin would be a hinged flap with a cord or a pull-plate with a cord, to let the operator compress the leaves in the bag towards the back so you can collect more leaves in a single pass. Circling back to the product. Unloading the bag and tipping it into a trash bag works with the bigger backs and the medium sized ones. For the medium sized bags you'll see I take the collector out and hold it on its side and pull out the leaves by hand, which works just fine. But get yourself a bag stand to take the initial few deposits of leaves, then pull it out of the frame, compress and it'll be ready for a few more. Don't know if it makes sense for the manufacturer to provide one, but they might be missing out on an opportunity for a few more sales. Overall: - works well on medium coverage - collection bin can get filled easily, have to stop and compress - twigs will clog it, remove them first - unloading is straightforward, take out, tip it on its side above the bag and unload by hand. - will be defeated by dense coverage, loosen it up with a rake first to spread it out then collect it. - wet leaves are not your friend.. let them dry - use the adjustable stopper at the front if the holding height when operating isn't high or low enough All in all its a very good product that means one person can collect leaves (as long as you get a bag stand as well). I'm very happy with it and look forward to seeing some improvements in future versions, by which time I'll probably need a replacement or spare parts. A lot less stooping to load up oversized bags in the windy weather. No more dust from mulching. I can tackle the leaf-collection gradually on my own without much help. Its not for everyone, but if you can't afford a ride along mower with the leaf collector attachment and you have the same problems with leaf-collection that I do , this might be just the thing for you. Ok, the ratings and reviews on this yard sweeper run from terrible to great. My experience is on the higher side of middle. I like the idea more than the workability of the product, but I won't give it up either. I have almost 3 acres of yard and I live in the southeast so we are talking leaves and PINE NEEDLES ( aka pine straw ). You have never appreciated raking nice light lovely leaves until you try raking pine straw. The pine in this area have needles from about 6 inches to nearly 10 inches and when they fall the entire yard will become solid orange in a few hours. Well, this little machine is not that easy to use when the pine straw is deep; the straw is too heavy and it while the sweeper will pull it up, it will not toss it into the bag/catch. Instead, when the straw is too deep and too heavy it will simply fall off the sweeper fingers (for lack of a better word) and fall short of the bag/catch. Also, you will have to hold the thing up a bit as you push otherwise the back support (what keeps it standing up when on its own) drags, so by the time you have gone back and forth for a bit you can feel it in your shoulders and forearms. Also, many others say this too, the bag or catch is a bit small; I can do one run along one side of the yard then I must dump it. If I don't dump it the load is so high the items picked up by the sweep run into what is already in the catch and then fall short, back onto the lawn. However, contrary to many other comments, I do like it and for me it works well (not perfect, but well). I do some raking when the leaves and pine straw is too deep or wet, but I prefer this as it is much easier (despite constantly having to empty the catch/bag). I am attaching photos to show the effect it has, now do keep in mind that the green part has been swept, and I did a couple of runs (this is not the result of only one pass, you must pass back and forth a few times to get your yard clean of pine straw, with leaves it is better). It takes me about an hour to do my front yard, the back is three times larger with a huge slope so it takes a great deal of time. There were some questions on what it picks up. I find that mine picks up small branches, leaves, pine cones, trash, nuts and other small items that end up in the yard. The smoother your yard is, the more likely it will pick up stuff. The one issue you may want to be aware of is that if you are going at a good clip those items, other than leaves and pine straw, can come flying up at you; I often have to dodge flying bits as I sweep. Now, the bigger pine cones often will not navigate the sweeper and I have to go back to pick them up manually. All in all, it has saved me many a weekend of blisters on my hands from raking and back soreness from raking. Would I buy it again? You bet. Is it perfect? Far from it, but until someone creates a better mouse trap I will manage quite nicely thank you!

To start, this is the only one of these lawn sweeper type things I've ever owned. It's possible that no lawn sweepers work that well, and the concept itself is flawed. But it should perhaps tell you something about the lack of usability of this particular lawn sweeper that I have that in my mind as a possibility: This so bad, maybe none of them work! And reading some of the other reviews of the other lawn sweepers on Amazon, it's certainly possible that's correct. Listen, I know it's one of the least expensive lawn sweepers out there. I knew I was going to get something made fairly cheaply, I expected it to be mostly plastic, etc. etc. The tool itself is a simple mechanism: It's a frame with wheels and flexible brushes on the axle, with an open bag attached. When you push it, the wheels turn, which turns the brushes, and as you pass over your lawn or other debris-covered surface, the brushes flip and toss the debris into the bag behind the wheels. That's the theory, at least. In practice, this is a roll of the dice at best. I bought this initially to pick up the thousands of blackgum spiny seed pods that litter my side yard in late summer/early fall. I had tried several other things, including those nut pickers with the ball-shaped cage at the bottom, and nothing reliably picked them up. So I wasn't too surprised when this almost totally failed as well. The brushes would leave about half the seed pods completely untouched, no matter how high or low I set the brushes, and of the ones it did flick into the bag, about a third of them bounced out of the bag and back onto the lawn. It was so slow and arduous, I actually stopped, sat down on the ground, and started picking up the pods by hand and tossing them into the bag. THAT was more effective. As for picking up leaves, I have several mature trees on a large lot, so I never even tried it for that. Even if it picked up 100 percent of the leaves on each pass, it would still be much more work than just mowing/mulching/bagging. But this spring, I did my first mow without the mower bag, opting to side eject the grass back into the lawn. Most of the clippings integrated well, but there were some piles in rows where the grass is thickest, so I thought I would come back around with the lawn sweeper to get the few spots where clippings were piled lightly on top of the blades of grass. Should be easy, I thought. Well, it wasn't. I tried it set to its highest setting, I tried it set to its lowest setting, and a few in between. I tried pushing it tilted at various angles to try to optimize the angle of the brushes to the grass surface. I tried walking slow and I tried walking faster (faster was marginally better). And I tried walking in long lines vs. moving the sweeper back and forth over an area like a vacuum cleaner. At any given point, it was only picking up, at best, half of the light, fluffy grass clippings perched high atop the grass blades. This is literally the easiest thing I could ask it to pick up, and it was still ineffective. I puffed and sweated and fought with it. The wheels frequently stopped turning, sliding across grass where maybe a little of the morning dew moisture remained (and if the wheels aren't turning, neither are the brushes). And heaven help you if you try a maneuver as complex as turning slightly while you're moving, the plastic frame will groan and squeak like it's about to break in half (and maybe it is). Again, maybe if I'd bought one of the more expensive, heavy metal ones, it would be just as ineffective and I'd be even more angry at having spent more money on something that doesn't work. But truly, for this tool, I don't know what the use case is. Maybe if you have a very small yard with very short grass and the leaves or other debris you need to pick up is light, but not too light, and just the right shape to effectively get caught by the brushes, maybe then this is a good purchase. For me, I can see the bag attachment actually being the most useful thing; I'll just take it to different areas of the yard when I'm weeding so I can easily toss weeds into the open bag. Beyond that, though, it's useless junk.

I probably put this thing through the toughest test right out of the box. I de-thatched my front lawn which is about 7500 square feet. This sweeper picked up about 85% of it which I’m not sure it’s made for stuff this heavy so I was impressed. The faster you push it the better it throws the grass into the bag. There are some cons I noticed right away. The grass gets caught on the “lip” of the bag right where it comes out of the brushes and will block more grass from being thrown into the bag so you have to stop every 10 feet or so to push it into the bag by hand which is annoying but as I said, not sure it was intended to be used this way. Other than that, the performance was good. The only other negative I could find was the “bar” that holds the bag onto the handle is already breaking. It’s cheap flexible plastic and I can’t see it lasting very long. When you go to snap the plastic “clasps” back onto the bar, they bend and I already see stress marks in the plastic where it’s bending and eventually going to break. I’ve used it for about 3 hours total out of the box so this is not good at all.

Please know that no one paid me for this review. It was purchased because we needed a low-tech solution to picking up all the leaves on the lawn. This Earthwise LSW70021 21-Inch Leaf & Grass Push Lawn Sweeper, is a little gem and should be more easily available in stores. It works so well, and turns back-hurting work in to an ease-of-use way to get the leaves off the lawn. Highly recommend it if you have back or knee issues, or if elderly, or need something non-electric, no wires, no-tech and very easy to use, that actually works! Important note: The instructions were a bit unclear and both my parents got confused in thinking the lower bar of the basket was supposed to attach under, but thankfully I got there before they broke it -- and showed them that the basket frame sat on top, so that once it filled up, it could be easily picked up to empty and then replace. Actually we found it's just leave the basket in place, and use a pair of work or garden gloves to pick up the leaves now easily reachable in the basket -- at least that's what we do. It also easy folds for storage during the winter, so another plus there. Because it's lightweight and plastic, I wasn't sure how long it would last, but it's till going strong and actively being used. So durability so far is good, especially for the price.

Very disappointed. The video that came with it to show how to assemble it was for an older model so I thought it was missing pieces which I wasn’t but didn’t show me how to really put it together although I did figure it out. Unfortunately, you have to push it in short motions back-and-forth to get it to pick up. You have to adjust the height quite a bit, and overall, it just doesn’t work that well. It works better on leaves than Pine needles and Pine needles were my biggest problem, but it still requires an awful lot of work so it’s not much easier than raking other than you don’t have piles to pick up, but the hamper doesn’t hold a great deal. The hamper does not stay in place so you have to continually pull it back up so the debris will go in it. Definitely not worth the money.

This works better than I expected. Great for leave and small trash clean up before a mow.

I bought this mainly to sweep leaves, acorns, and small twigs off my artificial grass lawn. It works great for this purpose. Just don't buy it expecting that this will be the only tool you'll ever have to use. To get my yard pristine, I still have to use a combination of this, a leaf blower, and a simple rake. This sweeper will pick up most debris (I'd say about 95%) in two passes - I go over my yard in a vertical direction and then horizontal. However, this is only true for flat areas away from any landscaping borders. You can't pick up much within about 12" of a fenceline or railroad tie because the brush is less effective at turning the debris into the hopper near the wheels. So, bad news is you still have to rake around the edges. Also, on uneven spots, like tree roots, yard drains, and sunken areas, the brush won't be able to dig in, so that blower still comes in handy. Still, this has been the most effective and efficient solution I've found to getting up the acorns and twigs. It is way more effective than using a high powered noisy blower alone. It took me a few tries to learn the right handle angle pitch and walking speed to be most effective, but in general it is very easy to use. As a bonus, even though this is not a replacement for a power brush designed to make artificial turf standing upright, it does seem to make the turf stand up better temporarily after a sweep. My main reason for docking one star is because of the durability of the hopper piece. My frame broke after a few uses. With a little duct tape it is still in working condition, but a little less effective than when it was new. Bottom line is that I recommend this product to anyone picking up yard debris on an artificial grass lawn.

Well, from the picture, you can see what it can do. This is a 50 x 99 inch trailer full of dead grass. It took me maybe 1 hour to fill this up with the lawn sweeper. It is probably the best purchase I made in the last 8 years. Your grass has to be around 2 inches long before winter if you want it to work very well. I also used a professional scarifier before using the sweeper. I used to work a full day on my lawn without these 2 tools, but today I can say it took me around 2.5 hours to do it. It saved me a lot of time. Pros: - Lightweight - Very effective - Easy to remove the container Cons: - The container fills up very quickly if you have a lot of dead grass and it could clog a bit (you have to do a second pass sometimes). - Lawns with a lot of bumps or that are not completely flat might be a slight problem. But so far, this is worth every penny spent.

The collector basket handle snapped on 2nd use. Had to tape it with electrical tape to hold. However haven’t used it since. Waste of time using this product instead of a Rake. Doesn’t collect leaves on bitumen driveway.
