This book is clear and well laid out. Tackles everything you’d want it to about how learning happens in a way that is easy to understand. However, surprised to see the author still mention germane load even though Sweller himself rejected the idea of germane load back in 2017.

I majored in neuroscience (BA 1998) and then have spent the following decades working in elementary schools - I love learning about learning! This book is absolutely incredible in that it teaches about great teaching both through the content and the delivery. The author is an expert on the learning sciences and explains the underlying concepts and classroom applications with simple but compelling prose. Every new piece of information is solidly bolted onto the preceding sentences, building an extremely clear understanding for the reader of the concepts that are being explained. The reader also experiences the positive effects of this kind of structured explanation, in which every piece of information is linked to and builds upon what came before. As a learner, you experience the clarity and insight that you hope to share with your students. It is pretty hard for me to explain just how unique and amazing this book is, so let me just recommend that everyone read this book - from the first chapter you will see what sets it apart!

I am only in the second section of this wonderful book that I just received (I am taking notes as I go), but it is clear that Ruiz Martin has not only a tremendous depth of knowledge regarding the science of learning, but he also has a knack for expressing academic concepts in clear and clever language that pulls the reader right along. Hopefully this book will help to dispel the appeal of pseudoscientific teaching methods that sell many books and appeal to many administrators , but are not validated by science-based research on what and how much is actually being learned. Highly recommended!
