The idea of crisp, pale lagers may have roots in 19th century Bohemia, but lager beer is far older and richly complex. Since Pilsner beer took the world by storm, lager beer has become a household term and a commercial behemoth before taking root among homebrewers and craft brewers. Modern Lager Beer is an exploration of the world of lager beers, their historical origins, and the detailed development and techniques used in their production today. Explore the Bavarian and Bohemian origins followed by an examination of the many significant ways that the modern perception of lager styles has been shaped by a myriad of techniques used to produce them. Many of the traditional methods once employed in the production of lager beer can be used today by the savvy brewer to create unique and delicious lager beers. Insight from many of today's modern brewers, along with traditional beers that have inspired them, will highlight the interesting ways that lager brewers borrow from these traditions in search of creating their own unique expressions of lager. Modern Lager Beer is filled with practical methods, processes, culture, and recipes from some of the world's greatest lager craft breweries. From the smallest details of decoction programs to philosophies of fermentation tank geometry, as much as possible of the minutiae of the world's most popular beer category is explored. Great review of lager techniques
I homebrew and am really into making a range of lagers. This book was great for the depth it goes into traditional and more modern approaches to a range of lagering steps and techniques. Super accessible and well written. One of the best brewing books I’ve read.

Great modern book
It’s nice to see a more modern take on lagers. So many of the existing books on the subject are just a spin on old German brewing traditions. Nothing wrong with tradition, but ingredients and equipment have greatly improved. There is good information in this book.

Very enjoyable read (not an advanced brewing book)
I started reading the Modern Lager Beer book a week ago. I am pleasantly surprised. It's a very well-researched book with many references. (Don't expect an advanced textbook like Narziss, Kunze or Back.) Minuses? A few. No references to inert (luftfrei) brewing (see Kunze, Narziss). Editing errors in recipes: eg, Weihenstephan Helles 1. is not decocted; W Original is decocted; 2. 11.8P OG and 2.75P FG doesn't get you 5.1% ABV. Recommended.

Great read for homebrewery or pros
Lagers are making a huge come back, and this book shines light on modern practices and tips for all brewers. There's also over 50 pages of recipes and covers all history and suggestions for every ingredient, even water treatment.

Great info and recipes
Just received my pre-ordered copy today. The format of the information provided in this book is similar to several of Gordon Strong's books(not the author in this book, but also a Brewers Association author), and for me is an effective format. There are a lot of great recipes alone that make the cost of this book a steal.

Libro consigliatissimo

Excellent modern deep dive
Great deep dive into making lager. A big emphasis is put on decoction methods of brewing which is something that I am unlikely to carry out at home but otherwise this is one of the best brewing books I have read and a must have book for all enthusiasts of the hobby
