Northern Light Technologies Flamingo 10,000 Lux Bright Light Therapy Floor Lamp, Black, 4 Foot

This is the 3rd light that I have owned that was built by this manufacturer, and I'm as happy with it as I have been with the other two. The first was a hand-held own from a friend, and I need to replace the light tubes on it, but the other two are going great guns. They improve my attitude and mood, give me really good light to work and read under, aren't uncomfortably hot and are otherwise just right for me. The base was damaged in shipment, so isn't as stable as it should be, but I didn't want to take the time to return or exchange it, but that's not the fault of the manufacturer or the product.

I love the design and function of this SAD lamp. I bought my first (same model) in 2010. It sits beautifully of the floor, is very sturdy, and I have used it positioned over my bed as well as over my favorite living room chair. I really feel this has helped me a lot with my Seasonal blues. I had read that the light should ideally come from above you, like the sun, so a tall floor lamp style was better for me than the kind that sits on a desk. After I moved house this past year, the section where the stem screws into the base broke off, but the light would have still been working, 100%. A handier person might have been able to repair it, but I was fine with buying a new one of these high quality, super bright, and effective lamps. The price has even dropped on this item since my first purchase! I feel very lucky and I really couldn’t recommend this particular model more!

I thought this light was very expensive but wanted a light that I could leave out so I would use it every day. It works very well and appears that it will last a long time. I like the light and feel better when I use it. I have even considered using it as a room light after I have sat close to it for a half to one hour. I feel disappointed when I turn the light off because the tone of regular winter light is not as warming or encouraging. The unit arrived with broken bulbs. I emailed and reported that night and had a reply the following morning. I was very relieved and impressed that they had already shipped a replacement unit which I received two days later. Then they issued a UPS call ticket to pick up the damaged unit as it was heavy and awkward and it was damaged. That was EXCELLENT customer service. I was so disappointed when it arrived broken but they more than made up for it. I could not have asked for anything more.

Normal delivery wait. Product has functioned well. Easy assembly. Whether its "light rays" will do for me what they say is still undetermined.

I'm not entirely sure I have S.A.D. - I did have a very rough winter emotionally last year for no apparent reason, however, but more relevant is the fact that it's physically impossible for me to get out of bed in the morning when it's dark outside. It was starting to affect my job, so I asked my doctor about using a SAD lamp after reading online that you should seek medical advice before taking such a step. He specifically recommended this lamp, and the difference was instant and astounding. It completely reset my internal clock, and now I can get up at 5:30am without any issues whatsoever! The reset also has helped me get to bed at a decent hour, instead of 12 or 1 in the morning as I was doing before. And I definitely feel more tired and emotionally low if I don't use it on a given day, so if I did have S.A.D. it has fixed that as well. It's easy to assemble, though I do recommend you follow the instructions that come with it. The base is sturdy/heavy enough that I don't worry about my cats tipping it over. I use it as soon after I get out of bed as I can by sitting on my couch & placing the lamp to my left, with the light box angled down toward my face while I watch TV for 45 minutes (the length of time recommended by my doctor). It's about 24 inches away from me in this position, which is the max distance one should have such a light. The instruction manual states that people with sensitive skin or eye conditions should use caution, but I'm extremely prone to sunburn (I take a low dose of prednisone daily, and have for 16+ years) and haven't had an issue yet. But that's just me, so definitely check with your doctor. In short, this lamp has improved the quality of my life. Yes it's pricey, but I'm too wary of "imitators" & gladly spent more money on the product that my doctor recommended to me. And I'm so, SO glad I did.

I was searching for a large light therapy light, as I live in the Northeast and have dealt with seasonal mood fluctuations though I haven't been diagnosed with SAD. I also live in an apartment with very little natural light due to the small windows, so it doesn't help matters much, and I spend my workdays indoors away from natural light (healthcare). It's too early for me to say if the light will help substantially with my mood, but I will say that it's like no light I've ever owned before; this lamp has a very bright, natural feeling when it's illuminated. I feel like even on days where the weather is bad or I get home too late to enjoy natural sunlight, I don't feel like I've missed out on 'sun' when I turn this lamp on for awhile. It works great for general purposes as a floor lamp for reading purposes as well. In terms of assembly, this took less than 10 minutes to assemble and is light enough that its readily portable (though heavy enough that it feels sturdy). The price is steep, but I felt it was worth a try, especially since it works as a general lamp as well.

I purchased this lamp as I wanted a "SAD" lamp that was free standing and that would say on (ie. no timer.) I wanted something with a similar light quality and output to my NatureBright SunTouch Plus. The Northern Lights does seem to put out a light similar to my NatureBright, although it seems a little less blue/more yellow. Basically this light does what I wanted it to do. Flood me with relatively intense "full spectrum" light. It does indeed feel like sunlight. There is no timer so I can use it as, well... a lamp. You can rotate the head along it's long axis, thus you're able to aim it down while sitting or up for a flood effect. It's at a good height for using it while sitting, standing at something aroung 3.5 to 4 feet tall. Grey mornings are no match for this lamp. My wife says it's ugly, but I think it looks pretty cool. However $244 is a bit expensive for what you get. I realize this lamp is a specialty item and not many are produced which brings up the price. Unfortunately though it looks like yet another case of the manufacturer knowing it's dealing with a niche market and one desperate for a solution to seasonal affective disorder. The lamp is solidly and simply built but certainly not very expensive to manufacture. Granted it's no $400 light-box (which is criminally expensive in my opinion) but it's also not the very affordable (now sub $100) NatureBright SunTouch Plus either. Why am I keeping it? Well, like I said, it's good and bright and sitting under it feels good. All the other "full spectrum" floor lamps don't appear to have the output of this unit. So essentially there is no other game in town in the floor lamp department. I thought about trying to cobble together my own lamp but came to my senses. If my wife thinks the Northern Light lamp is ugly, there is no way anything I could build would pass muster. So essentially it's a hard pill to swallow but one that does the trick. **Update** I dropped a few starts. It was a toss up between two and three stars. I settled on 2 as I can no longer use the lamp. After being moved around a few times the stand worked it's way out of the base. Regrettably the threaded end of the stand that along with a nut holds the base and stand together has stripped. So essentially I have a lamp that can't be stood up. It's clear when examining how the lamp is put together that it's done pretty cheaply, thus the stripped rod. It's beyond it's warranty and not necessarily user serviceable. So until I can come up with a "fix" or cannibalize it for some improvised lamp project, it's just sitting in a heap on a shelf. **Update #2** It has been pointed out to me that the light has a 7 year unlimited warranty. I don't know if that was in effect when I purchased the light or not. I very much hope so. If that is the case I will most certainly be revising/updating my stars/review! **#Update #3** Adding one star, as while I DID get a repaired lamp, dealing with the company was a chore. First I sent it to the old address, which at first I blamed myself as I referenced the address in a fairly old email. However, after realizing it had been sent to the wrong address and that the lamp was being sent back, I checked Northern Light's website and it turns out they had not updated their address on their site either. I pointed this out and they said it wasn't their fault as their web dev guy didn't know they had moved. What?!? Fortunately, I was able to get UPS to try again and the lamp was successfully delivered. Unfortunately, however NLT said they would not warranty the lamp as I had removed the head from the stand, in order to ship the lamp. They said, I broke the press fitting. Well, the lamp head came off with no undo force whatsoever, so it seems it was 'broken' from the get-go. I said the heck with it and ask for the lamp to be returned to me and they said I would have to pay for shipping. GAH! Anyhow, after a bizarre back and forth via email and phone, they finally agreed to fix the lamp if I paid for the parts, which came out to approx $12. I took them up on their offer and now have my lamp back. So yeah, I added a star, but the amount of stress to get the lamp fixed and returned was almost not worth it. While those I dealt with were pleasant the experience was again, bizarre.

Works as planned. Great for reading without eyestrain. Easy to rotate head.

What can I say about this light other then wow! It is massively bright! In my living room dining room i just turn this light on and face it at the ceiling and it lights the entire area as if its sunny outside. For the brief amount of winter i had with it, i would plug it in on my balcony around 5 when the sun was down and it was as if the sun was shining on my balcony, it was great, i cant wait to use it during the late night summer Its not quite as portable as i would like but also understand why. The base is heavy to offset the top half but its also wide which means I cannot stick it in my office while also pulling it out to out in the living room or balcony. The main purpose was for the office but quickly found it better in other areas of the house. As for energy levels, I didnt find it increased them or changed my sleep pattern but what it did change was happiness levels and irritibility. It greatly adjusted that which in turn makes it all worth while. Keep in mind, you shouldnt be using these lights before going to sleep or around bed time as it can influence your sleep pattern. I work nights so it made sense for me to get some sort of light at night. Take into consideration your own patterns and do whats best for you when taking into consideration how much light you are intaking. Great device, 5 out of 5 for sure, portability issue aside

Just what I wanted and needed. Nothing fancy, easy to assemble and use. Works well. I am sleeping better at night. I use this light shining on me for a few hours during the day and a red light lamp in the evenings. This has a 7 year warranty. The other lamps don't have warranties.

I suffer from severe major depression that always gets worse during the winter months so I invested in a light therapy lamp. This one was manufactured in Canada and had a unique structure I could position near my bed to use upon waking. It has definitely already helped within a week with my morning energy and I'm gradually no longer feeling wiped out and no longer needing a long nap in the afternoon. If I could make one suggestion it's that the upper structure that holds the ballast needs an adjustable 180 degree swivel joint that can be used to further increase or decrease the distance for lower positions. Other than that, this is a solidly constructed and effective Canadian made lamp.

Helps father handle dreary and dark days.

I am recently thinking about buying a second light as raining seasons seems started already. This one has been in my home for 1 and half a year, and i like the feeling the light can turn the dark room into a sunny 🌞 and bright place in an instant. I only wish the manufacturer can have provide more choices, I like its simplicity and effectiveness, but wish it can be prettier. 😹
