NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER • LEARN THE 5 SECRETS OF SUCCESSFUL COUPLES Conflict is the top reason couples seek help—but it's also an opportunity for greater intimacy, deeper connection, and lasting love according to this essential guide from the world’s leading relationship scientists and authors of The Seven Principles for Making Marriage Work and Eight Dates. “An indispensable resource that couples will use over and over again.”—Lori Gottlieb, New York Times bestselling author of Maybe You Should Talk to Someone How we fight predicts the future of our relationships. Most of us blunder into conflict without knowing what we are really fighting about and then quickly become overwhelmed by physiological responses we can’t control and emotions we don’t anticipate. The truth is the happiest and most successful couples fight—all the time. Conflict is human, and necessary. Through decades of research, Drs. John and Julie Gottman, founders of the world-famous Love Lab, have identified the five common mistakes we make when we are at odds. In Fight Right , we learn the five secrets that help us to get back on track and harness conflict to build stronger, healthier relationships. With kindness, clarity, and a deep understanding of the struggles couples are going through, the Gottmans show us that we each have a unique conflict culture, borne of how we were raised and how we experienced past relationships, and they take us through all the possible combinations, from Avoiders, to Validators, to Volatiles, and how they can best work together. Fight Right is an essential resource that will help couples escape the win-or-lose mentality in favor of a collaborative approach: calming down, staying connected, and really understanding, so that our fights can bring us closer. Review: Transform your relationship or marriage! - “Fight Right” is a remarkable and practically invaluable book for couples who want to deepen their connection rather than avoid or suppress conflict. Based on decades of research by world-renowned relationship experts John and Julie Gottman, this book turns the common misconception about arguing on its head—showing that conflict doesn’t have to harm your relationship, and in fact can strengthen it when approached with the right tools and mindset. 💡 Insightful and Research-Backed What sets Fight Right apart is its foundation in real scientific study. The Gottmans use their extensive research from the Love Lab to explain not just what couples do wrong in conflict, but why those patterns emerge and how they can be shifted. This isn’t just theory—it’s grounded in observable behaviors and backed by data, lending credibility and depth to every concept. 📘 Practical & Actionable Framework The heart of the book revolves around the “five secrets” that distinguish successful couples in conflict. These principles are described clearly and illustrated with relatable examples, making it easy for readers to see how they show up in everyday life. Whether you and your partner tend toward avoidance, escalation, or emotional withdrawal, Fight Right gives you a roadmap to stay connected, communicate more effectively, and resolve disputes constructively. 🌟 Engaging and Accessible Writing Even though the book is rooted in research, it’s written in a warm, approachable style that keeps you engaged from chapter to chapter. Stories, real-world scenarios, and compassionate insights help you understand complex emotional dynamics without feeling overwhelmed. The tone feels like guidance from trusted experts rather than a dry academic text. ❤️ Beyond “Winning Arguments” What I especially appreciated is the emphasis on transforming conflict into connection. Instead of teaching people to “win” fights or avoid disagreements altogether, this book reframes conflict as an opportunity for growth, understanding, and deeper intimacy. It encourages partners to understand each other’s emotional worlds and to build strategies that honor both people’s perspectives. 📌 Ideal For: • Couples at any stage looking to improve communication • Partners who feel stuck in repetitive arguments • Anyone wanting to build lasting emotional connection • People interested in psychology-based relationship tools Overall, Fight Right exceeded my expectations. It’s compassionate, insightful, and truly empowering—a must-read for couples who are serious about strengthening their relationship through the ups and downs of conflict. Review: Excellent Read! - Absolutely the best! Very helpful text to improve communication & understanding and though it’s targeting couples, these practices can also be implemented with peers, colleagues etc.

Transformative Tools for Better Communication
"Fight Right: How Successful Couples Turn Conflict Into Connection" has been an absolute game-changer for me. This book has provided invaluable insights into understanding where I go wrong in conflicts and has equipped me with concrete tools to improve my communication skills, not only in personal relationships but also in my professional life as a teacher. One of the most impactful aspects of this book is its practical approach. The strategies and techniques are not only easy to understand but also simple to implement in real-life situations. I've noticed a significant improvement in how I handle disagreements. Overall, "Fight Right" is a must-read for anyone looking to improve their communication skills and strengthen their relationships, both personal and professional. It's insightful, practical, and incredibly effective. I highly recommend it to anyone seeking to transform their conflicts into meaningful connections.

A great road map for making it through conflict with your partner
This book provides a road map for managing conflict in relationship. There are many great insights into why we fight and how to fight better. The book does include information and data from gay and lesbian couples. Even though this book discusses how misogyny impacts our relationships, it's also laced with misogynistic perspectives and is very cis-centric. They discuss how men and women view sex and connnection, making broad statements about these differences between men and women as if it is just nature, without addressing the ways that this is likely due to misogyny as well.

The Gottmans did it again!
I can’t recommend this book enough! The Gottmans share some incredible insights that really help you understand conflict - both where you’re coming from and where your partner is coming from. They invite you to consider conflict styles, the needs of your partner, and yes, YOUR needs. Since I’ve read this book, it’s a lot easier to recognize the signs of an unhealthy conflict so you have the opportunity to turn the conversation around and find the road to repair. Excellent read!

Great conversation starter
That was fun! Real fun! Very creative way to view conflict in a relationship - specifically a marriage. The end goal is not "never fight" but instead to "Fight Right". Couples who "never fight" are worst of than couples who know how to fight right. Wow! Really enjoyed that concept. It also went a level deeper and gave some real, concrete ways of putting the theory into practice. Very glad I had to opportunity to read it. Great book!

THIS SHOULD BE COMPULSORY READING FOR EVERYONE
It is amazing how we teach our children about completely useless knowledge and don’t teach them how to be good citizens and raise children in a happy marriage.

Practical and useful
Fight Right by the Gottmans is a must-read for any couple. It offers clear, science-backed tools for handling conflict in a way that strengthens relationships instead of damaging them. The “Five Fighting Fair Tools” are easy to understand and genuinely useful in real-life arguments. The tone is compassionate and realistic—conflict isn’t the enemy, it’s how you handle it that counts. Whether you're struggling or just want to grow closer, this book delivers real value in a refreshingly down-to-earth way. Highly recommended.
