Is it worth the extra $20 for the comfort grip compared to the regular handles?

Yes, it's definitely worth the $20 for the comfort grip handles. I have Knipex with both handles and am only getting comfort grip from now on! :)

Does the comfort grip hold onto grit making it more difficult to clean?

Rocketman:I have not noticed the grip collecting grit or dirt.  The Knipex comfort grip material is fairly rigid (not spongy) - So the "comfort" factor is in the shape rather than being cushioned. I don't think this is going to get very dirty.Cheers!

The black finish model says "steel" while the regular says "chrome vanadium steel." is there really any difference in materials between the two?

Material of Knipex 86 05 250 (10-inch) Pliers is identical Harden Steel. The difference your notice is in the type of Rust Protection that is used.

Using the information found on Knipex Website Pliers 86 05 250 Chrome Vanadium Steel has better rust protection than Pliers 86 02 250 Black oxide finish similar to your cast iron pot.
