this may be a silly question but the ones I'v e had in the past are longer, and velcro catches on all my sweaters in winter, does this one?

I really like this spica. I haven't worn with sweaters but it doesn't seem to catch on other clothing. I really don't have any exposed velcro. I hope this helps

Can The length of thumb splint be shortened? The fabric/brace is too long and covers my fingernail.

This picture pretty much describes the actual brace. Fabric comes up to my nail and I can adjust so it hits just below my thumb nail. Splint is not made to be shortened. I like mine and will probably order a second brace for when mine gets sweaty and need a a good wash in the washing machine.

Can this prevent the thumb from bending at all?

It is comfortable, it has one splint on the side that is positioned to prevent outward lateral movement of the thumb than downward/upward movement. I would call this "restrains" movement versus a hard prevent/stop movement. If one looks closely at the pics, the glove part of the brace goes down from the thumb, angling down to the wrist on the opposite side. Other brands, like the Mueller have two splints which help better for preventing upwards and downwards movement as well as lateral/outward movement, but as such then, they are not as comfortable for holding pens and mousing..
