Excellent - as good as lenses that cost 2x as much
Very pleased with the sharpness. Small, good autofocus, seemingly well constructed, fast (big aperture). The clarity this lens is capable is excellent, all the way to the corners. Pretty unbeatable for the price.

Excellent choice. Happy to recommend.
I couldn't be happier with this lens. I'm using it in a dedicated setup on a streaming camera (Sony A6400), with a teleprompter, and the lens is performing flawlessly. The image is clear and focus is quick, colors render very realistically, the front of the lens doesn't move when focus changes, so it works perfectly with the teleprompter, and vignetting is a non-issue. Don't hesitate to buy this lens. The price/value/performance ratio is excellent.

Amazing Quality for the Price
The lens out of the box feels high quality, much more than the standard Sony EF lenses, not the G or GM. The lens has a nice “heavy” metal body and smooth focal ring that feels great. The packaging surprisingly was great. The lens itself creates quite stunning pictures for its price. The clarity of it is better than expected and performs well. Has a usbc input for updating the firmware/software as your camera updates. Over all so far the lens was a great purchase. The AF on my Sony A7iv works flawlessly out of the box and is fast focus speed. Overall a good buy for a intro level good lens for your professional camera.

Great super wide lens. VILTROX has the secret sauce for high resolution lenses at budget prices
Impressive in every way. VILTROX has been on a tear lately introducing several extremely good, and also very reasonably priced, lenses, usually for Sony E mount, but increasingly offering lenses for Nikon Z mount and other as well. This VILTROX 13mm f/1.4 has just phenomenal sharpness edge to edge and corner to corner. Whatever design and manufacturing secret sauce VILTROX has developed seems to have mostly tamed the types of shortcoming -- like fringing, soft corners and distortion -- that have always seemed to plague super wide lenses, especially affordable ones. This lens is super sharp all the way to the corners, even wide open. At maybe the extreme edges you may see some slight decline in quality but it doesn't matter for practical purposes. Totally perfect? What is? Stunningly good for the price? Absolutely! Build quality seems very good. The lens is somewhat heavy due not only its size but also to the metal mount and barrel components. But it is really impressive as a super wide and fast optic. I have also recently purchased VILTROX 9mm, 40mm and 85mm lenses and they have all had fantastic resolution at a budget price. This ones a keeper here.

IQ is great, $$ is great, Build quality is lacking
Overall the body of the lens is lightweight as it is an almost complete plastic build, the only mental on the lens is the lens mount (which is the most important part). The lens hood is not the best but it does the job. The lens cap is very secure and have not had it fall off in my bag. The focus ring does feel a bit gritty, almost as if it is rubbing on the plastic beneath it. As for the image quality is falls right in line with the Sony 40mm f2.5. Center sharpness is great. Now there is some color fringing but you really need to zoom on to see it. There is a drastic price difference between the Sony and the Viltrox 40mm f2.5, and for the price you cannot beat the Viltrox. The autofocus performs well even in low light. It is able to switch distances quickly with very minimal focus hunting. I believe the Viltrox can do 85% of what the sony can, even though the build quality is not close.

Excellent wide lens. Great quality. Great Value
Viltrox has come a long way with their "upscale/pro/lab" lenses. I bought this primarily for astrophotography (Milky Way) and landscapes, and have been pleasantly surprised and satisfied. Excellent feel and a quality build. Excellent results. Easy updates through a USB port on the lens. Unbeatable, especially considering the price! 99% of a Sony prime but a fraction of the cost.

An Amazing Value
This is a wonderful lens and an incredible value for money. I say this as an amateur photographer for fifty plus years with over 75 lenses and experience with many more. I use this lens on a Sony a7II. It is very sharp and has great color and contrast. For me 40mm is the most versatile focal length, and I have several, including the Voigtlander Ultron 40mm f2, the Konica 40mm f1.8, and the Carl Zeiss Jena 40mm f4.5. This Viltrox AF 40 is a great addition to the collection.

Good quality images in low light. Design could be improved.
Update: After using this lens during low light and sunny day, I am going to lower my rating from 4 to 3 star. The Likes and Don't's remain unchanged, but the Don't's is getting more noticeable and getting in the way of the operation, and getting a bit annoying. I still like the quality of the pics, and if this lens would have been made to the specifications of the Pro Series, it would have made 5 stars, and I would gladly pay more for it. What I like: Good quality images in low light. Full metal body. Light weight. What I don't like: Lack of a "click" option for the aperture ring and it's too smooth for my liking. I just left it in the Auto locked position and use the camera to control the aperture. The manual focus ring is too prominent, making it impossible to avoid touching and thereby moving it. I mounted this lens on my Sony A6400 which I use for traveling. Overall, I like this lens but the design could be improved. At this price, it's a very good lens for serious amature.
