Good basic radio set, but initially won’t work with others.
Here’s my rundown on the BF888 walkie talkie. I uploaded the settings with Chirp. The frequencies for channels 1-16 are all over the place in the 420-470 range. Only one or two were standard FRS/GMRS channel frequencies, and those and most other channels had random digital privacy tones. That means that out of the box, these will not work with other regular 22-channel FRS radios you buy at the store or on Amazon like Cobra, Midland, Uniden and other common brands, although they do look identical. The two radios will work with each other. I don’t know if other sets of this product have the same frequency settings. It’s my understanding that the capabilities of these radios technically require the user to have a ham radio license. Free Chirp software and the common K plug programming cable allow you to change the settings and channel frequencies. I set mine to use FRS/GMRS channel 1-7 and 15-22 channel frequencies, with channel 16 being a designated chat channel we have with a PL tone in our other radios. They can be programmed to operate with other FRS/GMRS radios if you have the software and cable. These can be programmed to operate within the requirements of GMRS given the 5 watt output. Channels can be set with a different TX frequency and these can talk to GMRS repeaters with the +5 MHz frequency shift. Will the feds come busting down your door if you get these inexpensive radios to talk to your family members or coworkers without everyone having a ham radio license? Will anyone even know? Of course not. For what they are, they seem to work well and at their price, if one gets broken or lost it’s no big loss. They claim “VHF”. I’ve found that to be untrue. I tried to set a channel to receive our NOAA station. Chirp will not allow any channel to have a frequency outside of their range. There is a generic reference to FM but that may be misleading. The “flashlight” is a white LED. Channel 16 can be set to be a scanning channel but it’s a bit impractical, you’ll hear talk but not know what channel it’s on. If you’re not techy and just looking for basic 2 way talking, this could be a good choice as long as you know that these won’t work with other brands or models of walkie talkies without programming. Baofeng makes a nice 3-pack of FRS radios that have a few more features like weather bands and will work with other brands and models if you want something that’s more universal to talk to others, and no license is needed for FRS.

Just as advertised and worth every penny!
Exactly what we were looking for. Second time purchasing this exact set and they’re a great addition to our stock pile. Long range capability, not super tiny in size but it’s still lightweight and easy to clip on your clothing. They have great sound and are easy to use. Another factor is that our kids love using them and have so much fun communicating with us on the farm using these walkies. (We have went through our fair share of “kids” walkie talkies so upgrading them to these were a night and day difference)

Good walkie talkie but not a good scanner for railroads
I was trying to be able to use it when I was out watching trains. I bought a upgraded antenna and I got the programming cable. Everything works fine except for when I go to enter the railroad frequency in the program I get a error message saying that it is out of the range but yet it is only on the 160 frequency range. It works fine at my train club with the same channel as the other ones but I was hoping to be able to use it for both at the club and when out track side

Better quality than a toy but still great for kids
My son bought these with birthday money and it was a great purchase. My boys clip them on their jackets and ride their four wheelers through the woods and fields. They use these to communicate and they work great. We have found them to be clear at about 100 yards. The ear pieces are a little big for my five and nine year old but fit great for an adult. The flashlight on the end is an added bonus. These are better quality than a kid’s toy but easy for a kid to use. Especially at the price point, these are a great quality.

Simple and programmable compact 5W radios with good range
Cheap, simple, little 5W UHF radios. Pretty durable, good small size. Removable antenna, good range. Good audio quality in and out. 16-channel click knob, no display. CHIRP programmable. The only complaint I have is I wish they came with USB or any other DC powered charging stations rather than AC; that would be nicer for the car/camping. Note, I programmed mine with common Amateur Radio (Ham) simplex frequencies to use with my cross-band repeater setup in my car. Before that, when I saw the factory channels list on the radio, it was some random frequencies from 462 MHz to 463 MHz which didn't seem to follow any United States standard for GMRS or FRS, with random CTCSS or DCS on each. Probably fine for using as walkie-talkies out of the box and nobody will bother you, but it's worth noting. You might want to go into CHIRP and program the proper FRS/GMRS frequencies and whatever quiet codes you want before you use them.

Only comes with 2 batteries
This is the second set of the 888S radios that I have purchased. The first set came with 4 batteries (2 radios). I ordered another set of 2 radios, and in one of the product photos is shows the radios with the batteries installed, plus 2 other batteries to the side with all of the accessories. When I received the radios there were only the 2 batteries. The radios work well for occasional use (hiking in remote areas, 4 wheeling, etc) so overall I would give the product 4 stars but the lack of a spare set of batteries was disappointing. I reached out to Baofeng to check and see if it was supposed to come with 2 or 4 batteries, but they referred me to the seller on amazon, who I could not get in touch with. Baofeng couldn't tell me if it was supposed to come with 2 or 4 batteries.

Love them.
I bought these as a gift for my daughter as she wakes up thinking she hears monsters at night. She calls me on the handset and I walk around the house checking things out so she can rest easy. Fun outside for hide and seek games, or between several vehicles when family goes on road trips. Decent range. They are very easy to use, have good battery life, and great build quality. Compact size is a plus, and sound quality is okay, especially for the price point.
