Can it be used to shut off pump when a water tank is full?

The vertical switch that I bought is fully potted and could be inverted and used to shut a pump off when full.

If I made change in wiring, could I use this switch with a 12 volt battery backup sump pump?

Assuming you make the proper connections, the switch should do fine on a 12 V battery pump. My battery pump has the same float switch and is rated for 10 Amps at 125V.

How does this work exactly? My Meyers sump pump float switch wire goes into my sump pump. this is a separate plug on float switch? Explain install.

It's an independent float switch that you plug the sump pump into. If the original sump pump switch is broken, and hard wired into the pump, this may not work. You should check with a home depot type of store to see what will connect with your pump.

I purchased the 1/3hp Superior Pump without the float originally... has anyone put this on as an after-add (not a replacement) ?

I just called the company (Superior Pump) to ask if their vertical float switch (92010) would work on their model 91330 (1/3hp) sump pump. They said yes.
