Review: Perfecta Trifecta from the On.u Dub Selecta!................groan! - whilst browsing for reasonably priced dub syndicate back catalogue albums, a lengthy and relatively fruitless task, i was delighted to come across this box set containing three of their most lauded albums. surprised, however, to learn that it was issued 4 years ago, limited to 2000 copies worldwide, as part of the 30th anniversary of on.u sound, and there are still stocks available??? snapped up without further ado for about £6.50 an album. result. in fact a perfect outcome, as each radically different album in the set is a classic of the genre, and is housed in a card replica of the original lp issue. there is also an extensive information sheet included, but this will only benefit those fluent in japanese (which after all is the country of the release's origin). first up is 1982's 'the pounding system', which is the most traditional sounding of the three, but is still a great example of groundbreaking creationist dub, is completely without voice, and 'pounding' would be a good description of the contents. this material was already looking to take reggae in new directions, no mean feat, considering it's their first album. all the albums have stellar input from a host of the best players around (adrian sherwood, style scott and flabba holt being the nuclei), none more so than 'tunes from the missing channel', from 1985, which has the feeling of the most experimental album on show, and is probably the nearest in spirit to the classic on.u style. varied are the guest musicians and the instrumentation utilised, but the whole is completely on-track. apparently, this is one of on.u's biggest selling records. no surprise! last included is, in my opinion, the best of the trio - 'stoned immaculate' from 1991, which, although the rootsiest here, is no less forward thinking, and is certainly a pointer to the most recent material (this year's superb 'hard food'). great use is made of vocal samples, such as that by prince far i, and jim morrison (? - no need to worry, it totally works), and these complement the dub in a way that contributes to the 'groove' of the album as a whole, and groove it does from start to finish. again, re-shaping and re-modelling modern reggae. i imagine that great care and thought went into the selection of these albums for inclusion, and that these may be the best and most representative of their catalogue, and i won't argue with that, but would urge those interested not to hang around, as being a limited edition, stocks will run out. You got to have, do not wait, limited pressing.
