My previous soldering gun quit, so this was the closest replacement to what I had, and since the previous one worked well, (at least until it quit), I was willing to try this one. The unfortunate thing is that I didn't have a project that required soldering until today, (so I completely missed my return window). The holding gun simply doesn't get hot enough to consistently melt the soldering. This one has a bit of an upgrade of being able to turn up the temperature, but even at the maximum setting, (which says 520 degrees), it still can't melt through the existing soldering. I am not asking it to do anything heavy duty. I use it when I am rewiring electric guitars. Small wires. Small amounts of solder needed to secure the wire. I have tried the different tips to see if that helps as well, but it doesn't matter which tip is used. It simply will not get hot enough. It is a great design that allows you to hold the soldering gun and feed the soldering wire with the same hand, which obviously frees up your other hand to help hold the object to be soldered steady. But if the gun doesn't get hot enough, it is useless. Very disappointed.
