The must have New York guide
Really good and detailed guide booked. Used lots for planning the New York trip and then used lots whilst over there for recommendations on areas when in them. Would highly recommend being used for any short trip to New York.

Great guide as ever
Love Lonely Planet guidebooks and this edition was super helpful in preparing for and travelling to NYC. Sure, information is online now but having a guidebook helps you prepare, gives you ideas, and gets you excited to visit!

Should be more detailed
It’s a useful guide for getting rough ideas what the main attractions are. But that’s it. It doesn’t give you any detail (eg plan of the museums, cathedrals etc.). The book doesn’t help with preparing for visiting places. For example it doesn’t provide the history of an important cathedral, its plan and description what to pay attention to when visiting. The same applies to bigger sights such as Ellis island (we realised how much there is to see there and about hidden attractions there only after arriving there, the guide didn’t indicate the richness of this place at all). The guide is good mainly as a ‘shopping list’ of places to see during your visit. This is useful to some extent since browsing internet for NY attractions is overwhelming and you might not have time for that!

I have tripped planned in 2025 and this book has really helped with different ideas on what to do and some really handy tips. Has made my trip planning so much easier.

I was a customer of first hour (Asia on a shoestring). Seems that there is a new style of Lonely Planet travel books (this is the second book I buy in this style). For me you can leave out the “where to sleep” and “where to eat” sections, because this is probably better covered “online”. But the rest you should leave as it was. That was value for travelers. I will continue to buy old versions, because it works for me. But this new style is completely useless for me, because I have to do all the research by myself.

I spent a solo week in New York City using this guide. I always knew the operating hours and what to expect when I got where I wanted to go. I had so much fun that I’m planning a return trip!

TOTAL UNBRAUCHBAR !!!

We have used Lonely Planet guides for over 20 years. Through 2018, they all had the same helpful format: every site description included the name, address, web address, phone number, hours and days of opening, cost and map reference in book. Eateries and lodging in the vicinity were included in the same section. This 2024 version on New York City has NO information about location, hours, cost etc. NONE!!! To find the location of a museum, eatery or monument, you have to look for it on a map (which may not be on a nearby page) or go online. I researched "what happened to Lonely Planet" and discovered that new ownership and reduced staff omit the basic information that made the guides so valuable. The maps have streets in light grey tiny print which make it difficult to figure out the location of places. All in all a pretty useless book. Won't be buying any more "updated" Lonely Planets. Try Frommer's or other guides.
