My house builders conveniently substituted Cat5 cable for telephone lines in the early 2000s. So I'm redoing the jack terminals to provide ethernet throughout the house. I replace the telephone jack at one end, but need to know which cable (in the big bundle routed to the basement junction box) is the matching end. Bought this device to help. Initially I thought it was a fail, but turns out it works great for ethernet (hit or miss with telephone terminals). What worked - unplug all the cables from the terminal. Go to any room and replace the telephone jack with an ethernet jack. Plug in the transmitter with ethernet adapter. Go to the basement with the receiver, and bingo - beeps loudly for the wire in question. Not sure if I was doing it wrong when I tried the telephone jack adapter... but it is a great product for ethernet! There's also an aligator clip adapter, so this could likely be used for all sorts of wire hunting projects... Just plug in the transmitter at one end, and

Worked as expected - used for home networking testing wire down 3 floors from top to basement. There were multiple wires coming into a network closet in the basement (8+) Ethernet, was able to trace a single room wire in the bundle and wire it correctly for use. Tone was loud and clear. Honestly, as someone who used to wire buildings and had Fluke equipment, this is a dang good cheap option. I was impressed. It's cheap and works.

Rufus says it can trace underground wires for up to 3KM, making it effective for locating buried cables. Code burial depth is 18" and it cannot detect wires that are more than 6" underground. I didn't test it on RJ45 or RJ11 cables and it may work fine for them. While the build quality was not commercial grade, it appeared adequate for occasional home use.

This tester works, but the signal is marginal and hard to discern. After using this tester I tried my buddies Fluke brand circuit tester and there is no comparison. The signal from the Fluke is much stronger and there is no ambiguity as to which circuit you are tracing. I will be returning this one.

So powerful and so affordable. I'm so happy with my purchase and it's made running Ethernet so much easier

Did not work out of the box. Detector light worked but not the signal receiver.

Very disappointed with this purchase. The package is supposed to include 2 batteries, but the batteries are missing. I received the main tester and other accessories, but the required batteries were not included, so I cannot properly use the product. Please check the packing before shipping. Not satisfied with this purchase.
