Does this work with shielded/foil cat6a please?

Yes, it does. This crimping tool (VDV226-110) supports CAT3, CAT5e, CAT6/6A cable types. Actually, it will depend on the type of RJ45 connectors. For shielded/foiled cables you may be required a special type of connectors (for example: Pass-Thru™ Modular Data Plugs, RJ45-CAT6A, Shielded (STP) VDV826-705). In my practice, I even used this for crimping CAT6e (STP) cables with no issues. Regards

The new version is for the MUCH simpler to use pass through type RJ45 plugs and cuts off the excess cable whilst crimping, the model you mention is as far as I am aware only for the traditional type of RJ45 connectors that dont have the pass through functionality, so whilst it would still work fine crimping them you would need to cut off the excess with a sharp blade afterwards

can this unit be used on flat RJ45 cables

Having not used flat cables I couldnt say for sure, although with some trial and error I cant see why the cutting blade wouldnt be suitable for preparing them As for the crimping and cut off part of it, that only related to the plug, what type of cable you insert into the plug shouldnt matter as long as it meets the Cat5/6 specifications After that all the tool does is push the IDC blades down, cuts off the excess wire that passes through and compresses the cable grip in the plug, so it shouldnt really matter what type of cable you have used
