Which of the different shaped brushes is best for mineral foundation powder?

Hi Martha, I'm going to give you a bit of extra info so I can better make suggestions that will help you with your choice. There are so many options for applying mineral foundation, but the first suggestion would be a natural-haired brush rather than a synthetic-haired brush. Natural hair brushes hold powders better than synthetic (manmade usually taklon or nylon). Natural-haired brushes are made from natural hair like squirrel, badger, pony and the best-sellers are mink (the animals are NOT harmed so don't worry!). But natural brushes are more expensive, are a bit more difficult to care for compared to synthetic-hair brushes. They are great for powder application. BUT I've never used a natural brush for my mineral foundation because the brush that was sold with my makeup and made for the makeup was synthetic, and that is a kabuki, rounded. It seemed to work well, but makeup artists do typically use natural brushes for powder application.Synthetic brushes are cheaper and more widely available. They are easier to keep clean and less prone to damage. Easier to keep clean because thy don't absorb the pigment. Synthetic bristles are very smooth, and so they don't hold powders as well (some would say they don't hold powders well at all so opt for a natural!). Here's the good news: The synthetic brushes like the one pictured here (hopefully that's what you see) are well suited for soft layering of powder, which is exactly how you want to apply your mineral powder foundation! Plus it's more versatile and economical because a synthetic brush can be used for application of both powder AND liquid/cream foundation, cream blush, cream eyeshadow. So if you feel like using a liquid foundation your brush will work for that, too. Now for the shape of the bristles. Most recommend rounded bristles for a powder foundation, and flat tops are probably the most popular brushes for liquid foundation. I thought the rounded worked fine for me, but I will say that I bought a synthetic flat top powder brush (it was sold as a brush specifically for powder application and is also synthetic) and I absolutely love it. Important to mention that I do NOT use mineral powder foundation--I use my flat top powder brush for finishing powder/setting powder and a large fluffy rounded one for powder bronzer, rounded for powder blush, rounded for highlight powder. So I'd say for the versatility, a ROUNDED top brush would be a great choice. But if you want to give a flat top a try, I'd recommend investing in the more expensive one, rounded, and then grab the Studio flat top powder brush from e.l.f. for just $3 and see how you like it. Like I said, you can't go wrong owning a rounded, but like me, you may find the flat top beautiful for buffing powder, and even though the e.l.f. is synthetic, it buffs my finishing powder to an air-brush finish. And for $3, there are many users who claim they use it to apply liquid, too and it works for them. I think part of this is personal preference so keep that in mind. Hope that helps.
