Is it ok to use the other side of the topper than what seems to be the "top" of it? The straps still work to secure it. It also feels cooler.

You can use either side. Depending on whether you use the mattress topper on the left or right side, you would have to flip it over OR if you want the cooling unit at the foot of the bed or on the nightstand near your head. Some users even put it under their mattress cover so that it wasn't so cold.
