A hidden gem
Leo Kottke was unknown to me until I was tipped off to this album by Mark Barry's excellent Overlooked Albums book OVERLOOKED ALBUMS 1955 to 1979 - Exceptional CD Remasters - Reviews For 400 Forgotten LPs... (Sounds Good Music Book) . I have been missing out badly โ this is excellent. Mark has already written a very thorough review here which I won't repeat, but I will say that I agree almost completely. I'm a little less keen on Kottke's singing than mark is, but it's perfectly decent, the songs are good and the guitar work is excellent. For me it's the instrumental tracks which make this such a brilliant album. The virtuosity is quite breathtaking in places โ I genuinely think of modern greats like John Fahey or Bert Jansch or great old ragtime bluesmen like Blind Blake when I hear him. I was completely bowled over by Last Steam Engine Train when I first heard it โ and still am, really. The whole thing is just an immense pleasure. If you have any interest whatever in fingerstyle guitar I would urge you to try this โ it's a real hidden gem.

This like most original pieces of Leo's music stands up to the scrutiny of any critic. He does a great job through the entire disc with both instrumental and Vocal cuts. Greenhouse is a wonderful disc and I shall be spending a great deal of time with it over the near future listening for all the great work he put into this original music..This is a reprint from BGO records and they always do a great job of representing the songs and music in a good way...This is a really great disc for those who love folk music

I have a special affection for this album, as it was my introduction to Leo Kottke. And while that obviously colors my review somewhat, this was & still is a wonderful album, period. As previous reviewers have noted, it's not just a matter of technical skill (although that's quite impressive in itself), but his warmth & humor in playing: you get a real sense of the man, not just a musician but as a person. He's always been quite disparaging about his voice, but I like it, it's honest & comfortable & welcoming. This was a good part of my youth; decades later, it's a good part of my life. Most highly recommended!

My brother had Greenhouse on a cassette tape. He gave it to me. It may have been the very first tape that was all mine and I didn't have to share. I played it so much I knew where to go on the counter to get to my favorites. Once, I sang Lucille to a car full of my mom's friends. I was about 14? That did not go well. I played air guitar along with Kottke for months. I have seen him lately on YouTube and have not been disappointed in the music. When this CD came, I literally ran to my brother to show him. This is just great guitar work and hard to imagine it's not sampled/enhanced/digitized or otherwise manipulated other than by Kottke's 10 talented fingers.

Interesting. Not as good as to me as Jorma Kaukanen's "Quah". But still really good. If you enjoy this type of music.I didn't like every song, but didn't dislike any . It's a case of to each his or her own.Great guitar player, some pretty good songs.Again you have to like this kind of music.I do.Always looking for something different.

This is the 1990 disc issued in that year. It has never been touched in studio outside of that. With that being known the dynamic range is very high though the recording is quality is okay to good/great with minor hiss. The material on this Kottke release is some of his best and it is worth the buy. I just wish they had actually remastered this stuff.
