Love the product after the first use on my lawn and friends lawn. Several week later the lawn looks great. Sturdy and quality enough for the price if your yard is the average home lot size and you don't have health issues (it does use force and strength to push/pull and push into ground with a non-dry and non-hard ground)... but you only have to do this once or twice a year. If you have health problems or BELOW the average person strength this is NOT easy to use. For me I want to loose some weight and enjoy a 5 to 10 mile bike ride so the "Easy to use" is a 4 of 5 (make no mistake I was using some effort to do the work). A true aerator will pull a small straw/pipe size ground hole where this forces ground apart so I probably will do this twice a year in stead of once with a true aerator. A true aerator will cost you in the $1000's. For this much of a price difference I will be more than happy to use it twice a year. I does take about twice the effort than a push electric/gas lawn mower and about 3 times the time but I like the exercise (especially when it is only twice a year - some of you might think the exercise is great and want to do it more - not sure if it is good for lawn). I bought a $3 cinder block and $2 two bricks to place inside the cider block. The cinder block is placed on top of the aerator and attached with a $3 rubber band with metal hooks to add sinking weight into the ground. Assembly is easy and loosening handle can fold it into three parts for storage. Wheels are great for moving weighted down aerator between lawns, on way to clean/hose wash spikes (no dirt on sidewalk/driveway between lawns), or to store. I am very happy with this product and very glad I did not get competitors product.

Holy cow this thing is tough to push with a cinder block on it. i was having to break at each end of my lawn. I couldn't help but laugh at myself for spending time trying to find one with longer tines. Without the block it seems to not go as deep. Also gotta agree with other commenters wanting a longer handle. I'm right at 6' and this was brutal on my lower back.

It can be pulled or pushed. It is easier to pull it, but even with a cement block as weight it won't work as well as when pushed. However pushing it will take a lot more effort. I might have to add two or more blocks to weight it down so that I can pull it, but there are no places to attach straps to it to stabilize the blocks. The unit is a patch work of quality materials and some that I doubt will last. Fingers crossed. Overall a good aerator given the price.

Possibly the worst purchase I’ve made on Amazon. Comes in a plastic bag in a plain Amazon box, not very easy to assemble. You have to add weight to the top to get it to work, I had to put 2 cinder blocks top to get it even break into the surface of the ground which it only did about a half inch. With the extra weight on it, it becomes incredibly difficult to push or pull across the yard, and I am a 6’ tall 215 lb man that works in construction and something like this is usually of little effort to me. Instead of aerating the yard, it looks like you attempted to til the yard like you would a garden except only about a half inch deep, literally looking like you dragged a garden rake across the grass, scoring the dirt and ripping the grass even though the blades were turning the whole time. If I could give it 0 stars I would. After 15 minutes of use I requested a refund.

I don't know why I thought this would make round holes in the ground but it doesn't. It makes slices. I wanted holes (not the big plugs that pop out the cylinders of dirt but still I wanted decent sized round holes) so that the grass seed I'm putting down on my sloped yard could have a chance at not washing away were it to get caught in said holes. I seeded a few weeks ago and it all washed away the next day despite me raking it in so I'm desperate here. Easy enough to assemble but you are going to need enough sockets to hold both sides of the nut and bolt. The tools they provide are useless. I just tossed 2 bricks on the plate to give it a little extra weight but my lawn is a very sandy fill dirt and it was still sort of damp from a rain so this thing had no trouble at all penetrating an inch or two. I know for some that's not enough...and we settle because we love each other...but for my purposes that depth was good. Since it didn't make the round holes I was wanting I decided to make 3 passes on my lawn for better chance of seeds being able to fall into the sliced up dirt. I did up and down, right to left, and then diagonal. It does go deeper if you push it rather than pull it but pulling it is so much easier I did one pass pushing and one pass pulling. If I were to have any grass at all and therefore have maybe more stable dirt from the roots and thatch layer I am not sure how well this thing would do. I'd assume it would need weighed down more and prob be a real pain in the arse to push. As I said pulling doesn't allow it to get as deep as pushing so I am torn on if I should keep it. It's pricey for what it is. I can't see being able to use it for more than getting bare dirt better prepped for seed... I hesitate to return anything anymore because you know who has a tendency to "lose" returns and say too bad so sad you still have to pay for it. I don't want to send this $90 item back only to end up with no tool at all and still be charged.

FWIW... I'm a licensed professional LA in both NE and PA. I'm constantly looking for equipment and methods that work well in direct application. While in the past, I've used the typical "punch" version of aerator that punches a series of holes and leaves plugs. The problems I face with that type of aerator are threefold... 1. I have to rent the equipment and transport it, 2. It's HEAVY to operate and I must "wrestle" the equipment the entire time I use it, and 3. I can't just use an aerator any time I want to use one. So, I took a gamble and bought this "aerator" wondering whether it would truly work. Much to my SURPRISE, it actually does work... and even better in many ways than I expected. The best results that I've experienced are based upon the following: 1. Make sure your ground is sufficiently wet (or saturated) before using. If the ground is too dry, then there is too much soil resistance that prohibits the aerator from penetrating the ground as it is intended. 2. Expect to "RUN" the aerator back and forth multiple times.... so it aerates sufficiently. Only one pass will not do much. 3. If using for re-seeding -- as I was doing -- then, REALLY run the aerator back and forth.... plus at multiple angles so you get enough ground penetration to create a good seedbed. As you will experience, the aerator "lifts" the soil a bit which is "PERFECT" for re-seeding / overseeding. I've had extremely GOOD RESULTS this Fall by using this technique. 4. If your ground is sufficiently saturated, you will NOT need additional weight on the top of the "roller body" (as is shown in the photos). In fact, I found that the added weight made things WORSE. So, I HIGHLY recommend using this for reseeding / overseeding within your existing lawn. For the price, it is REALLY, REALLY good and I'm glad I got it because it worked better than I had EVER hoped. BUY this with confidence it will work for you as it did for me.

This is my first time using a manual aerator. I spent hundreds of dollars worth of lawn care products to have for myself since I’m a homeowner. Giving your money away to contractors who can do the job for you is OK but there’s nothing worthwhile than doing it yourself because at least she gets to experience what it’s like to do your own online and now you see why landscapers charge so much for their time it’s hard work. I took my almost 45 min to build this aerator. Maybe less but I had lots of fun doing so. Once I got done cleaning up my lawn from all the dead grass and debris I will tell every single one of you that is getting ready to buy this thing be prepared for a workout. When you first get started, just beware that you can either push it or pull it. Pulling it is way easier, but you will get more of an effect when you push it which is much harder and let me tell you it is a workout I kid you not. I went to the nearest Lowe’s and bought me a brick to put on top of it to add some more weight and pressure. The next day I felt like I was at the gym for four hours. My body is so sore all over and I actually felt like I was in an intense gym workout. It can cut deeper if you go over the same spot maybe two or three times but who got time for that lol . Once I was done, I seated and fertilized my lawn and began watering it for about 30 minutes.

Hubby bought this for aerating the lawn and he loves it. Easy to use and it does a great job. Putting it together was a cinch and he was off out aerating the lawn in no time! He was quite pleased with his purchase and would recommend it to others.

Wow! What a surprise! I have been looking for an aerator with steel tines for a while and now I have it. And also at a reasonable affordable price. This is truly a very sturdy aerating tool for the garden that will not likely to break down. It is very sturdy, with very heavy grade of steel. Assembling it ( comes in a box ) requires simple wrenches ( which is also provided ). The hardware for the assembly are very simple and you can't make any mistakes. The assembling instruction is also very good - easy to follow and no need for a microscope. Just to make it clear ( picture doesn't show it), There are 5 rotary steel tines - 8" diameter with 10 spikes each. Easy to remove the steel tines for cleaning. I recommend spraying the tines with WD-40 each time before using the aerator. A good idea is to disassemble the tines for cleaning and storing for the winter ( steel will rust ). If you want deeper holes ( up to 2 inches ) you will need to wet the grass and/or add some weight to it. Generally, the amount of pushing pressure would be like pushing snow with a snow-pusher. This also acts as a good cardio exercise tool.

Once a weight is attached, it will not roll forwards. You can only pull in backwards direction. Without a weight, pushing forward it is easy to use and it will scarify earth. Therefore, the tool will be useful to poke very small holes before overseeding lawn. However not good as a true aerator. The build quality is pretty good, including the bolts and screws. With some tweaking to allow it to move more freely when a weight is attached, it has potential to be a good device, due to the quality of the build.
