I hope I will never have to use it! BUT . . . .
Believe it or not I had a fire under the hood just a few weeks ago (the only one I have had in 50 years!). It occurred when I was about 50 feet from home. Hubby saw me coming and had the fire extinguisher ready, and was under the hood almost before I stopped the car. We were lucky. No damage. BUT. Shortly after, I saw this item at a great price, and ordered. I even installed it myself. Peel and stick. In the event of a fire under the hood, the fire retardant is activated by temperature, and sprays. I do not expect super powers from this little item, just some help should I need it! It it the kind of thing you hope never to have to use, but I am much more comfortable knowing it is there. A car fire was the last thing I thought of, and I was extremely lucky. I want to bypass the luck and go straight to HELP and SAFETY. I would recommend this item to anyone. It would make a great gift for anyone under any circumstances, especially a child or other loved one; one less thing to have to worry about.

Best for enclosed spaces, may be corrosive to electronics
This is a "Condensed Aerosol Fire Suppression" (CAFE) device - you can look up that term on Wikipedia to see how it operates. When triggered by high heat, an aerosol mist of fine particles, along with some gases, is generated by combustion of a solid material - these particles and gases spray out the nozzles, extinguishing the flames. There are two variations of the compound, one that uses potassium nitrate and one that uses strontium nitrate. Annoyingly, the leaflet included with the device mentions both, in text that looks as if it had been lifted from Wikipedia, so there is no clue as to which is used. The Wikipedia article says that potassium nitrate compounds "produce a corrosive by-product that may damage electronic equipment, although later generations lower the effect." The leaflet does say, and this is reinforced by the Wikipedia article, that CAFE devices work best in an enclosed environment. My planned use was for my 3D printers, but unless I mounted this inside the chamber, it might not do any good. I do see that the Wikipedia article says that CAFE devices can work when directed towards the tops of the flames, which may work in my case. The device can be mounted to a flat, smooth surface using the 3M adhesive tape preinstalled on the back, or one could use the two zip-ties included in the box. Obviously, I have not tested it with a fire, but I have seen enough videos of similar devices to understand that they work well in their intended environment.

Tiny automatic fire extinguisher--easy install options
This tiny automatic fire extinguisher measures just 3"h x 2"w x 1"deep. It is marketed as designed for fire control in an engine compartment; however, it also notes that it will work in any enclosed or semi-enclosed small area. I got this device to give to my son for his 3D printer enclosure. He runs his printer A LOT, which makes me nervous so I guess I did this for my own peace of mind. This clever and compact system has a large 3M adhesive plate covering the entire back. So, the first and easiest mounting option is to adhere the box to a smooth, clean and flat surface above/near the area of concern. The system also has two fold-out plastic tabs with a hole in each. These can be used to screw it into a surface where the sticker might not work or for extra security. The third mounting option is to use the two included high-temp zip ties, inserting them through the tab holes and around some pole or other feature near the protection area. Wherever it's mounted, it needs to be relatively clear all around it so that any fire or extreme heat will reach its tiny side-mounted sensors and so as not to block the suppressant dispersion holes on either side of the box. My son plans to mount this device on the inside wall of his 3D printer enclosure using the 3M mount. I'll update my photos with a shot of this install as soon as possible. Obviously, I'm hoping this thing is never needed...better safe than sorry. I should note that the directions that come with this device are printed in microscopic lettering and only moderately useful. Luckily, the mounting options are pretty straightforward and pretty obvious. Even so, a diagram or two would be helpful.

Reassuring!
This is a difficult device to review! I'm very glad they make these, as car fires are definitely a fear. When I was younger, a relative suffered a car fire during a long drive, and I've never forgotten that. This extinguisher is designed to fit under the hood and extinguish engine fires, which wouldn't have helped in that long-ago situation, which was an under-car fire, but engine fires are actually more common! Now, it is a very, very small, slender device, which is necessary if you're fitting it under the hood of a car. Some car hoods fit very close, and depending on what else is under there it might be a tight fit, but if you can fit it under there, and it works, this could easily be a life-saver in the right (or wrong?) situation. That's one crux though, it has to work, and without a fire, you're not going to know. We'll assume it will work when needed, and proceed with that assumption in this review. Installation is easy, and the extinguisher comes with the sticker to do so. The extinguisher fits securely once attached. If it works as advertised, it's a device every driver should invest in. Now, this device would probably not work with electric vehicle fires, which burn at much higher temperatures and which require specialized methods to extinguish.

Very neat idea, expand the pictures to read the info that comes with it
This very compact fire extinguisher seems like a great idea but I don't know how to test if it works or not without doing something like throwing it into a fire. I could, however, take some pictures of what it looks like and also try to read the tiny print on the sheet of information that came with it. Mine seems to have leaked some powder inside of the box. I figure I will store this in a fireproof bag that will also be holding Lithium batteries. While I don't know if it would be able to suppress a lithium battery fire it is probably better than nothing at all and the small space inside a fireproof bag might allow this rather small fire extinguisher to work. If I ever actually have a battery fire and this extinguisher triggers I'll try to remember to come back here and let everyone know how well it worked.

Cool concept
I had never heard of a gadget like this. This is awesome for any place that you can think of that has a high risk of fire with limited fire suppression options or for an area that has something important that you would like to increase the likelihood that it survives the fire. While I have not actually used the product I have it mounted in an area of my home where I keep sentimental items. I used the included mounting tape which is effective and do not see it falling off, especially in a temperature controlled house. The unit appears durable and if mounted in the engine compartment, then it would hold up to the heat. The size of the unit also makes finding a spot for it pretty easy. It's basically just plug and play (attach it and it is ready to go). This gives me some added comfort that these items fair a better chance from being burned or destroyed. I would definitely like to have several more of these for other locations around the home. I am surprised these type of extinguishers are not more readily available. I highly suggest.

A first layer of response
In 55 years of car ownership, there have been 3 vehicle fires: two in a turbocharged Corvair, one in a 911 Porsche. All have occurred when my wife was driving; none were catastrophic because of my wife’s quick calm use of an onboard halon fire extinguisher. Ironically, both met their end victims of a forest fire that also destroyed our home. Needless to say, I know it can happen to me. All of my present vehicles are equipped with at least one halon fire extinguisher; my Jeep carries two halons and one dry agent ABC. Offroad a full sized shovel is mounted on the exterior. Oh, and I carry a fire blanket as well. Why so much? Because with a vehicle fire (really every fire) seconds count and quantity matters. Retrievability, accessibility, and proximity can make all the difference between little damage and total destruction. Race car owners understand this and utilize systems that can instantly distribute the extinguishing agent from one central tank to multiple locations, including engine compartment and cabin. I lust for such a system in my Jeep, but simply have no space left to fit the tank So I finally come to this diminutive device. It’s small size makes if feasible to include inside even the most crowded locations, such as in engine compartments and near confluences of wiring under the dash. Its operation is automatic, and relatively immediate. That immediacy may allow its action alone to be sufficient to extinguish the fire, more likely, it will suppress it enough to provide the time to employ other extinguishers of greater capacity. This is an inexpensive means to add a more forward line of defense, IMO, it should not be your only means of defense. For me, it is unproven, especially with respect to activation, which makes it essential that it is an addition to, but not substitute for a good conventional extinguisher, preferably halon or it’s more recent equivalent (only these will work, despite a closed hood, when shot through the grill). A few specific problems. The instructions are obtuse and in tiny print. They state a life span of 10 years, but nowhere on my unit is there a date of manufacture or expiration. There is no way to verify operation of the unit short of destroying the unit. I just can’t assign a five star rating to a product when I can not verify its function. The manufacturer would be wise to seed a bunch of these to people who can test them without loosing their purchase price.

Nice low-profile fire mitigation device
Obviously I'm not destructively testing it, but it seems to be pretty good from what I can see. The extinguisher is fire activated not smoke activated, so it'll go off as soon as flames touch it and not just from an engine that goes through oil quick. I might feel better with 2 or 3 in the engine bay, because it is so small. Make sure to adhere it somewhere that's not right over the battery terminals, even though it is a plastic shell. Adhesive allows it to be put almost anywhere that's not in the way of engine function (side of the battery, on the washer fluid reservoir, under the hood, etc). Probably best for internal combustion engines or the engine area of hybrids, it wouldn't do much for a large battery fire.
