Nick Fury: Agent of S.H.I.E.L.D [DVD] [1998]

With a plot and acting on a par with Stallone's 'Cobra' I did a double take when I realised this wasn't made in 1985. Its the perfect drop in drop out watch out of the corner of your eye over a few beers movie, because there is no point trying to make sense of it. But it's go The Hoff in it so it's brilliant. By definition.

'Nick Fury - Agent of SHIELD' is an early 90's, made for TV movie, starring 'Baywatch' and 'Knight Rider' star David Hasselhoff in the title role. Written by Stephen S.Goyer (of 'Dark Knight Rises' fame amongst many other famous works)the movie starts off with Fury retired and living in the wilderness, having been drummed out of SHIELD due to being deemed unecessary and lacking the diplomacy needed to operate in the post-Iron Curtain era of world politics, however when a resurgent HYDRA steals the corpse of Fury's nemesis, Baron Wolfgang Von Strucker, and the deadly bio-weapon, the 'Deaths Head' virus contained within it, the decision is made to invite Fury back to the agency in order to save the world once more. The cast includes other famous SHIELD agents and support cast such as Timothy 'Dum Dum' Dugan, Clay Quartermain, Gabe Jones, Kate Neville, Alexander Pierce, Contessa Valentina De Fontain, Arnim Zola and Andrea and Werner Von Strucker. Theres also plenty of the kinds of crazy gadgets and equipment that were the mainstay of SHIELD related comic-books, including the helicarrier and life model decoys. The acting is two dimensional at best - plenty of wide-eyed evil villains laughing uncontrollably and providing exposition for their nefarious plans, laboured fight-scenes full of kung-fu kicking and cringeworthy puns, and the special effects are pretty terrible - although perhaps indicative of the era and the shoe-string TV budgets of the time, but its still a fairly entertaining yarn of rabble-rousing, larger than life heroes fighting to save the day. Hasselhoff also nails the title role of Nick Fury better than you might expect. He certainly fits the part physically - bestubbled, growling, gun-toting and cigar chomping as he is - but also manages to to quite effectively convey the image of an old fashioned cold war hero, with old fashioned values, struggling to deal with the number-crunchers and bean-counters that are now running his beloved agency. Make no mistake, anyone expecting the kind of polish and style that weve become accustomned to with Marvels modern movies is going to be disappointed, but theres enough here for an afternoons worth of child-friendly light entertainment, and frankly the recent Agents of SHIELD tv series would have done well to have adopted a little more of the over the top action that is in abundance here.

Good film with David hasselhoff

I love all these sorts of films but this was absolute rubbish, actually I would have liked to say c**p but I don't suppose I can put that. I was really disappointed. When I buy these films my 2 sets of grandchildren usually grab them off me when I have watched them, but this one, they all said very uncomplimentary things about it and didn't watch it. Nick Fury is one of the central people in SHIELD and the Marvel franchise but this did nothing for SHIELD or Marvel - absolute tosh - I cannot give it no stars, there is nothing to do that with, but if I could, I would. I didn't watch more than half an hour of the film and that's half an hour of my life I cannot get back

Very disappointed. A low budget film. Was expecting much better from the S.H.I.E.L.D collection. Poor graphics, poor story line.

Having grown up with the original Marvel timeline, I consider this Nick Fury closer to Stan Lee's Howlin' Commando turned spymaster, than SLJ's slightly slicker (but equally awesome) interpretatIon Felt cheated that no original Nick (just a sergeant in WW2) Captain America

An older Nick Furry, and a nice movie. Different from the more recent superheroes movies but still in the same mood.

No extras, but hey at least they released it, unlike 1977 Live Action Spiderman Show, 1994s Fantastic Four (Roger Corman produced movie), 1996 Generation X tv movie. Audio/ Video Quality, Not too bad, the video is in Full Screen. Video is alright, image is full of noise (dirt, grain, especially in the scenes of the air craft in the air). It would be nice if they also released the Generation X tv pilot, that Fox also made in the 90s. Would be nice if they put Generation X as an extra on the Blu rays for the new X-Men movies!

Bon film de 1998 c'est sûr que les effets spéciaux ne sont pas ceux d'aujourd'hui mais il est très appréciable joué par David Hasselhoff, maintenant le rôle est joué par Samuel L. Jackson un très bon acteur lui aussi.

While I could review this movie for being a direct to tv and movie, designed to be the series premiere to a Nick Fury tv show, or the fact that it is ridiculously priced to get a US copy of the movie - I myself will review it the way I experienced it for myself. I said "screw you" to the sellers offering this movie in US copy for the whopping price of 200 or more dollars. I purchased a region free dvd player for the low price of $25 and got a UK copy of the film for about $10 from Amazon. I think I've won there because I finally got to experience this in the comfort of my home and on my own movie system. Anyway, I have taken with pride what this movie and it's story, characters, and world is to me. "How we viewed media of that time. It wasn't even the fairly identifiable special effects and mediocre fight scenes that made me say "This movie sucks." But if you think about production costs, I myself can imagine the budget for a "Film premier to an episodic tv show." It carries the same mantle as making a tv movie about NCIS. You're gonna have a cheap film budget. More on the movie itself. I wasn't effected negatively either by it. More over, I felt nostalgic. Seeing an action film like this brought me back to childhood when I watched action film after action film all with cut and paste plot. Male protagonist, female side protagonist, villain (SO EEEEEEEVIL!), fights, guns, explosions (Which mind you there are only a couple explosions in this film, mostly gas). To the point... I felt like a kid a little bit as I had the same feeling I felt with other movies like Bad Boys, Speed, etc. Color me too friendly but man, to see something new and remind me of the good days I had at home as a kid. I'm sold. Again, I accept its flaws and think about reasons why it could be that way. As a film premiering a tv show is. It's going to have only a little character growth, a heavy set exposition base, and a classic cut and past terrorist story arc. More growth and exposition maybe even better story plots and a richer story along with an even greater amount of budget with revenue as the show aired with new episodes. Who knows if it actually could've seen a better light than it did. All in all, I was happy to add a RARE Marvel film to my collection and I'll watch it again.
