Expensive CYOA Books
This is best for solo play, for a group it's too rigid for a proper RPG there will be a lot of listening and not a lot of roleplay. It's more open than a traditional CYOA book with elements that open up as the story develops but at it's heart it's still a game book like Fighting Fantasy so if that isn't your thing then this won't be either.

Excellent but very pricey!
Good fun but waaaaaay overpriced at £45 if you can get around the £20 mark I cant recommend enough

Good game but not at this price. Got it for less than £40 and new.
Enjoyed the game but thank goodness I bought it elsewhere new for £40. The rules are easy and the game can be played solo. Shop around. Come on Amazon !

Tabletop D&D style adventuring
I have played about 4 hours of this game so far in total. It is comprised of several adventure books, map, letter, character journal, cards and a few tokens. The writing is excellent but I think it won't be for everyone. I first played a couple of scenarios with my partner. He didn't enjoy it very much as he didn't click with the fantasy setting, characters or plot whereas I wanted to continue with the adventure. It then sat on the shelf until our son was old enough (just turned 10) to enjoy exploring the world of Dragonholt. We have had an absolute blast with the first book and so much fun creating our characters. He plays D&D so we really got into it this time, whereas last time my partner and I used stock characters from the Fantasy Flight website. I've given it 4 stars as the writer identifies as non-binary, and as such has included some gender swapping characters in it that feel a bit incongruous. I am also aware that I will need to keep a close eye on the evolving plot as there are two major events that could traumatise my kid if the plot goes a certain way (some reviewers have become upset by two key events in the unfolding story that can occur depending on the choices you make) so I always glance at the text first before he reads it. It's a nice game to play whilst sitting on the sofa as there is no board, dice to roll or other moving parts, just books and sheets of paper. Instead, the skills you have chosen for your character dictate your actions and which paragraphs you read in the book. I would say that I prefer Roll Player Adventures for the style of story and characters and that the company I'm playing with is making it a lot more fun for me than playing it solo. However this is a more chilled 'choose your own adventure' experience with a lot fewer working parts than a lot of other adventure board games I've played. It is also easier to pick up and play for that reason.

This game is fantastic! It is very challenging and takes a bit to learn but after 5 or 6 practice games we got the gist of how to play. It's always the way with these types of challenging boardgames. They are next-level when it comes to being stimulating. Thoroughly recommend the game.
