Which file to play depends on your computer's software. The decoder itself does not play the file. Yes, it will improve the sound quality, but there are limits to the improvement of lossy compression formats.

Excuse my ignorance,before or after preamp?

I would suggested to use it before preamp, DAC is more like to clean up the computer signal to output to amp.

How do i get this to work with amazon hd from my windows pc?

I dont have this dac yet. but i do have amazon music HD. you would have to enable amazon musics "exclusive mode" in the settings. windows will treat the dac as an audio device. hope it helps. let me know because I bought this dac for the same reason lol hasn't came yet. i have had other dacs in the past and im assuming this is how it works.

I would be using this with my marantz receiver sr7013. can you tell me which one has the better dac? you can see the specifications on amazon.
