Can the circular micrometer be detached from the grip handle?

I do not think so. the lever mechanism, springs, etc. for the plunger are contained within the circular part.

is the clamping force adjustable?

I was able to open up the gauge housing and carefully stretch the tension spring for a lighter pressure from the jaws.
