Buy Spoon: A Guide to Spoon Carving and the New Wood Culture by The Spoon, Barn (ISBN: 9781501182761) from desertcart's Book Store. Everyday low prices and free delivery on eligible orders. Review: Excellent descriptions that make recreating the spoons fairly straightforward. - Brilliant. I have created most of these spoons based on the very clear instructions. Barn-the-Spoon's own life story is inspirational. Also interesting are the historical contexts surrounding wooden spoons and vessels in Britain's medieval history. Review: the process of making and a deep understanding of function all inform the design of these simple but beautiful spoons. The 16 spoons are perfect apprentice pieces ... - I came to this book through attending one of Barn’s spoon carving workshops and it conveys his thoughtful but unfinicky approach to making spoons in a very readable and accessible way. The photographs illustrate how the nature of greenwood, the process of making and a deep understanding of function all inform the design of these simple but beautiful spoons. The 16 spoons are perfect apprentice pieces because the process of making each spoon teaches you something new about working with wood. Spoon carving takes me out of my day to day worries and preoccupations to a place of joyful focus and concentration and this book is a proving to be a great guide – I thoroughly recommend it.

If you carve spoons this is the must have book
I have read a number of books in this area and this is by far the best. Older books cover the grips but this is a modern book with good photos. I have met Barn and clearly he is without doubt one of the world experts on carving wooden spoons. That does not mean the book will be good but it is well written, has good photos and even like the physical binding that is better than normal. Great that he does not resort to telling you how to use sandpaper like some books do in this area. Also has useful section on spoon design that I liked as a more experienced carver looking for new ideas

Damaged book
The book's lovely but, where to start? Not happy with Amazon's service at all. No care taken by whoever quality controls orders /shipments. The envelope itself was dogeared and half opened but that does not appear to be the cause of the damaged cover. I can only assume that whoever packed this grabbed it off the shelf and chucked it across the warehouse into the waiting envelope without bothering to inspect it first. The cover was scuffed and torn, back and front, and not at all suitable for a gift (which is what it was intended to be). This was, incidentallly, my first order with my Amazon Prime trial... Not a good impression. The book itself (inside) looks great but a little light on actual practical details and diagrams which is why I'd bought it. However its still a lovely book. Very nice photography too.

An amazing book, beautifully produced
An amazing book, beautifully produced. You get the sense of a real connection with the craft, tools and the wood. It's not just a manual, but does provide really important methods, approaches and tips. Barn's writing draws you in to his love of this apparently simple craft. I've started carving spoons with Barn at the Green Wood Guild.

Great book full of good advice for a novice like me. Above and beyond the practical stuff Barn discusses the New Wood Culture and shares his thoughts about modern living. Bought the book having listened to Barn on Saturday Morning Live on Radio 4 I'm not disappointed and his warmth comes through just as it did on the radio.

Spoons - we all use them daily. They are simple things of great utility, and the chances are that we take them somewhat for granted. However, some folks don't, not in the slightest. And Barn is one of these people. Barn's book "Spon" is a paean to the simple wooden spoon, in all it's subtle complexity. Barn's passion and exuberance shines through in his book, written with care and love, and a desire to share that with us all. So, pick up a copy, grab your tools and get carving!

Craft at its finest
Really beautiful book, lovely images and down-to-earth philosophical commentary on spoons, their history and how to make them. Inspiring to see how by focusing in on something so familiar endless possibilites open up. Great purchase and an inspiring teacher!

Excellent book, such talent. Another worthy mentor for all of us enjoying this recent “revival of craftspeople”, in every area of life. These times are refreshing indeed as many roll up their sleeves and pick up a craft, refusing to completely succumb to life’s distractions. Only after time, mistakes, victories, & determination do we sometimes witness a master emerge. Make way for one more; Barn the Spoon.
