Ed Sheeran is set to release his new album ‘-‘ (Subtract) - the last in his decade-spanning mathematical album era - on 5 May 2023 through Asylum/Atlantic. An album that revisits Ed’s singer/songwriter roots, and one that was written against a backdrop of personal grief and hope, ‘-’ (Subtract) presents one of the biggest stars on the planet at his most vulnerable and honest. In Ed’s own words - “I had been working on Subtract for a decade, trying to sculpt the perfect acoustic album, writing and recording hundreds of songs with a clear vision of what I thought it should be. Then at the start of 2022, a series of events changed my life, my mental health, and ultimately the way I viewed music and art.Writing songs is my therapy. It helps me make sense of my feelings. I wrote without thought of what the songs would be, I just wrote whatever tumbled out. And in just over a week, I replaced a decade’s worth of work with my deepest darkest thoughts.Within the space of a month, my pregnant wife got told she had a tumour, with no route to treatment until after the birth. My best friend Jamal, a brother to me, died suddenly and I found myself standing in court defending my integrity and career as a songwriter. I was spiralling through fear, depression and anxiety.I felt like I was drowning, head below the surface, looking up but not being able to break through for air. As an artist I didn’t feel like I could credibly put a body of work into the world that didn’t accurately represent where I am and how I need to express myself at this point in my life. This album is purely that. It’s opening the trapdoor into my soul. For the first time I’m not trying to craft an album people will like, I’m merely putting something out that’s honest and true to where I am in my adult life. This is last February’s diary entry and my way of making sense of it. This is Subtract.”Since he first learnt ‘Layla’ by Eric Clapton on guitar at the age of 12-years-old, Sheeran’s love of the singer/songwriter began. Growing up with the likes of Damian Rice, Bruce Springsteen and Bob Dylan playing on repeat in his parents’ house – artists that his dad, John, introduced him to – ‘-‘was always on Ed’s horizon. Yet as the songs and writing process took on a whole new meaning and direction after a series of hard-hitting events impacted Ed’s world in 2022, one thing that remained untouched was his strong desire to make a record anchored in his love of singer/songwriter compositions. And now, as he gears-up for the release of his most soul-baring work to date, ‘-‘ serves as a timely reminder for why Sheeran remains one of the most gifted lyricists of his generation; an artist who breaks down his own experiences for fans to seek comfort and belonging.‘-‘ is the result of Sheeran pushing the boundaries of his songcraft, as he delivers the most profound songwriting of his career. Teaming-up with Aaron Dessner (The National) on writing and production after the pair joined forces following an introduction from mutual friend Taylor Swift, Ed and Aaron began crafting the album in February last year. Writing over 30 songs during their month-long studio stint, the album’s fourteen tracks are seamlessly tied together by exquisite production from paired back, folk-leaning textures to bolder, full-band/orchestral arrangements.Ed Sheeran burst onto the UK music scene in 2011 with his debut album ‘+’. Rapidly establishing himself as a history-making artist, he followed with ‘x’, ‘÷’, ‘No.6 Collaborations Project’ and ‘=’ - a catalogue that has seen Sheeran become one of the world’s biggest musical success stories of the 21st century. Review: Good CD - Good CD. Review: Masterpiece - After the first three songs, I literally had to lay down, close my eyes and just listen.... All of Ed's music is amazing but this album has not a single weak spot. The melodies, the harmonies, the lyrics (because Ed is truly a master storyteller), and to top it all, it's VERY personal... So personal that I could actually relate to a LOT myself, just like millions of others... I regret I hadn't come across this album when I was on the verge of depression last autumn, because it's better than a therapy session. The songs reflect what Ed was going through while writing them, mainly grief and depression, even suicidal thoughts. They are raw, painful and yet truly beautiful and moving at the same time. But as always, Ed know that when you hit rock bottom, there's only one true way - up. And 'Fields of Aberfeldy' (the last track in the regular album edition) prove that. The bonus songs on the Deluxe version are exquisite, absolutely not just some extra addition to the album. They could easily be singles as well, and the closing one, 'Moving' is a stroke of genius musically and vocally... Subtract is definitely one of my most precious musical possessions...

Best yet
A superb new album from Ed Sheeran. I've been buying music since 1957 (dropped a needle on Dusty more than a few times too) and I rate Ed's albums as some of the best. This new one is in my view the best yet, more paired down, personal and poignant. Some absolutely beautiful songs. For me, first hearings usually need more to really appreciate the song, but these had an immediate impact, not because of any simplicity or anthem, but clearly written from the heart and some great concepts and production. Will love getting to know these songs. Deluxe version definitely worth buying - those 4 bonus tracks are equally splendid. Thanks for great music Ed. Glad you're not giving up!

I love all of the album
I really like this album and the only negative I have is with the cardboard sleeve which after a time can get tatty or spoilt, why are they not using jewel cases. Not up beat music but then again raw emotions, feelings at the time are reflected in the songs, there are a couple of songs that made a cold flutter inside me while listening to them due to my own emotions and memories. i have five of his album's (not the collaborations), and there is not one song on them I dislike. Great singer songwriter hits the mark every time. The more I play this the more I love it, no it's not sad or morbid, it's pure motion and I love the change in Eds voice thank you Ed Yet another superb album.

Ed Sheeran at his best
I love this CD. I feel it is the most emotional raw of Ed Sheerans past few years of loosing his best friend and diagnosis of cancer with his wife. The words and emotion in his voice are compelling and I think it would touch the hearts of anyone listening. He compliments most songs with a series of videos you can see on YouTube and I urge people to watch his documentary only available on Disney which explains how he poured himself into music. Excellent and highly recommend.

Meine absoluten Lieblinge: SALT WATER, LIFE GOES ON, COLOURBLIND, BORDERLINE, SYCAMORE (Achtung: Hier sollten Taschentücher bereit liegen), NO STRINGS, THE HILLS OF ABERFELDY Fazit: Ed Sheeran ist einfach eine Legende, so einzigartig und trotz seines riesen Erfolgs in keiner Art und Weise abgehoben. 5/5 STERNE!!
