Harris Farms Screw-on Poultry Watering Base for Quart Jar, Red

I hatch quail and chicken chicks often, so I need a durable & affordable screw-on watering dish, which this fit the bill. I ordered two the first time & I am glad I did as they are strong & easy to clean. Quail chicks are total nut jobs so having one that will attach on a variety of jars should it break, is key. This screw-on fit on an apple sauce jar and a pickle jar, both made of glass which makes them easy to sanitize along with the screw-on in the dishwasher. This attachment works well for chicken chicks for the first few weeks, but is not advisable for daily use with hens & roosters (pullets & cockerels only). It is durable enough & the right size for adult nut jobs aka quails and would work for reptiles as well.

This was a replacement for my backyard bird drinking bottle. This plastic is so much better than the metal one I had!!

This has worked well for my baby chicks this year. You just need to make sure that the mason jar lid is screwed on just right. If it is too tight, water may not come out. If it is too loose, the jar may come out of the bottom dish and spill water everywhere. Something to be aware of!

Mason jar fits it well. It is also very sturdy and easy to clean.

This is perfect for brooding chicks. Easy to use with a standard mason jar. No leaks. Keeps babies from falling in and drowning. They do outgrow this setup in a few short weeks. I set my waterer on a brick as they got bigger, but they quickly learned to fly and roost on top of the jar, thus pooping in the water. When this happens, it's time to upgrade to a larger canteen.

This is my third water style of water base for my chicks, and it is the only one I'll save for the future. I have previously purchased the red plastic base as well as the metal one, but this one fits the best. The fit is tight with a regular canning jar and no leaking. The water refills right to the edge continually as the chicks drink. The base is flat and sits squarely in the pen. However, most importantly is the fact that the rim is designed to make the drinking trough precisely narrow enough to keep the chicks from standing it which is a huge time saver when the water supply is clean.

It just seems a little expensive for a plastic piece. If it was metal, it would be better.

I wanted to make some easy to use, easy to clean hummingbird feeders - these bases were perfect. I have three different sizes of mason jars so I can adjust the amount of fluid as demand increases. Found appropriate sized plastic lid (from tubs at the Soap Exchange), carefully measured and cut hole to slip over the inner ring the mason jar screws into. Used standard office paper hole punch to create holes for the yellow flowers (replacements for commercial hummingbird feeders) to snap into as the feeding ports. Used indelible/permanent red marker to color the jars red. Used wire to create "cages" for the jars so the feeders can be hung. I'm thrilled with the outcome!
