Very easy to use and will quickly slice plenty of cabbages and carrots for Sauerkraut and Carrot salad. It comes with a pair of safety gloves which is just as well as the blade is almost scalpel sharp.

You'd soon be moaning if you struggled to put a carrot through it! I've been using a V slicer mandoline for many years, mine was an orange, plastic, affair which recently stopped slicing as well as it used to - mainly due to the plastic 'rivets' holding the V blades in position. Hence the new purchase. Glad to see that this can be placed on the top shelf of a dishwasher, although I've always been brought up to believe that very hot water isn't good for blades as it can dull them. Did I mention this thing is sharp? Well they all are. Unfortunately, the supplied gloves were just a tad too small for my dainty mitts! But, to be honest, I wouldn't fancy testing how effective these things are. In any case, I've managed for the past 20-odd years without fancy gloves. This thing whizzes through veggies like the preverbial hot knife through butter. I've been using this most evenings to prepare our meal, tonight's offering was chicken pasta salad - so, carrots, apples, cucumber, peppers and a red onion all went through the wider of the two julienne blades -which is, supposedly, for making chips. To be honest, that set of blades is OK for a scrawny French fry but not for half decent chips. However, as I said, it whizzed through all the raw veg I put into it. Replacing the julienne blades with a plain blade, this thing was more than happy to slice a few, older, softer, tomatoes! (I don't like waste) Now the downside - in my opinion (and based upon using my old V slicer). The slicer inserts. My old slicer had just 2 but they were reversible, giving 4 thicknesses, from wafer thin slices of potato that were practically see-through to a decent chunky slice of tomato for topping off the burger - I even put spam, corned beef and Ox tongue in the freezer for a while just to give them a bit of 'body' so they don't break up when I put them through the slicer, I believe this slicer would also benefit from either reversible inserts or extra inserts provided. The cutter inserts. The julienne insert is fine, the other one is OK at best. However, I believe that a third insert could be provided which would produce an even thicker 'chip' (15mm or even 20mm would be nice). I like to run my spuds through the chipper insert so they cook quicker in the steamer. It would be nice if the manufacturer could provide all these additional cutters/inserts either in with the price or for a few quid extra if bought at the same time, the storage devices could be made so they lock together to form one, larger, unit. The hand guard. In my opinion, the picture used in the advert shows the guard being used incorrectly. When you stab, for example, a potato into the guard, the mushroom button on top raises up. You are then supposed to place this button in the palm of your hand and hold the sides of the guard with your fingers. The act of pressing down on the button prepares the item for the next slice to be removed. The guard also has a projection on each side which, when you have removed excess veg, stops the guard from moving side to side, guiding it up and down the slicer. There is a semi-circle cutout on each side of the underside, this is supposedly there to help hold a carrot (or similar), it does work but the cutout could be larger/deeper. The rear stand is also a good idea - however, it doesn't hold very well when stowed so often drops down when not required - bit of a pita really. Of course, the real test will come in a few months' time when the turnips and swedes are bought for adding to my stew (again, a larger 'chip' blade would be great). Lastly, a few tips... slicing onions - cut the top off and peel the onion but leave the root intact. Push the onion into the hand guard and slice - leaving the root intact usually means no tears when slicing the onions. Slicing carrots, start out by holding the carrot and pushing it through the slicer at an angle to give a long cross section rather than a round one. I also use the V slicer (with the chip blade) to slice broccoli stalks, carrots and onions into water when cooking meat, adding a stock cube before placing the meat in the roasting tin. Makes great gravy/soup.

This is a good quality product. Extremely sharp as it should be but sits solidly on the kitchen counter and used carefully -with the gloves!- can be used safely.
