Do you know what size spool the projector will take?

It takes the 5 inch spools. The 8 inch ones will not fit. I actually transferred the my 8 inch reels onto smaller reels using a film editor which I picked up for a fiver on eBay.

Can you edit the vine film? My father cut/spliced lots of films together (a cure for insomnia at times!)

you want to view the films first either on the scanner or if you have the the correct gauge 8mm film projector ie; super 8mm; standard 8mm; . once you have done that make notes of exactly what scenes you want to scan cut films and re;splice or. scan the lot and edit on your lap top or computer with suitable programme.

Does the unit use the sprocket holes

Yes is does. Scanner measures gaps between sprocket holes do to recognise if you have 8mm or super 8 film.

When converting my reels, sometimes it just stops and the screen goes black? When checking the SD, its not saved.

It might be that you have joined two or more cine tapes together and the joint is a bit more thicker than the film.
