i need to use this for a picture.  what is the maximum width that can be used on this?

The tray is 1 3/5" (40 mm) thick. You can refer to the second and fourth pictures to get the specific size.
If the tray is not wide enough for your picture, I kindly recommend another easel, its tray is 2" (50 mm) thick, which might meet your needs. Here is the link:

How low and high from the ground can i adjust the bottom resting piece (above tray) where my canvas sits? (for sitting & standing) can i raise it?

Dear customer, thank you for your attention to our product! This easel is suitable for standing & sitting! Please see the information below.
The height of the upper tray (where the canvas sits) can be adjusted from 20" (510 mm) to 47 1/5" (1200 mm) high.
You can easily adjust the height of the tray by using the metal ratchet under it. (When raising the height of the tray, it is more convenient to directly pull the mast up!)
