No More Excuses: Be the Man God Made You to Be (Updated Edition)

This book is a must read. I understand it is 10 years old but when you read it you forget that. It is relevant to the life we live today. Tony explores all the excuses we (men) use as to why we are not good husbands, fathers, friends etc. Tony crushes all of those excuses using the only book that really matters, the Bible. The Biblical references is what makes this book so powerful. It is one thing to read a book where someone is telling you how they made it through hard times. Most of us will read those types of books and think it does not pertain to me personally. However Tony gave Biblical examples that far exceed any struggles we have ever had in life. One of the examples is of Joseph and how he was imprisoned for all those years. Prison in Biblical times are far worse than they are today despite what stories we hear from those who have been. This book is a life changer, if you open your eyes, ears and hearts to it. It is truly inspriational and I recommend this book to every MAN to read. There is so much I want to write about this book, but I do not want to give it away. There is no excuse in this life for any shortfalls we have. If you read this book I guarantee you will find that whatever you say is holding you back is minor compared to what is in the Bible. So read this book and throw your excuses out the door.

This book is a must read for any man of God. Whether brand new or seasoned in their walk with Christ Jesus the LORD, this is a must read! This book deals solidly and theologically with what is common with men of God throughout history - Excuses. Excuses as they relate to a man's upbringing (Moses); family background (Joseph); dabbling in defiance (Jonah); puffed up attitude about service to the LORD, blowing it, but then being restored (Peter); temptation (Paul), etc - this is just the opening sequence of chapters in Dr. Evans' book. This book is the focus of our men's Bible study for the next 9 weeks. The men are reading 2 chapters weekly and when we meet for Bible study we break open God's Word as the foundation (exegetically and contextually), and include insights and commentary as provided by Dr. Evans in the respective chapters. In three words "Buy This Book!" It will grow you, show you, confront you, challenge you, water you, and refresh you. Dr. Evans is an incredible writer and conveys with incredible clarity and personality doctrinal truths. As the Senior Pastor of my church, this is a book I will continue recommending to other churches and men whom I come into contact with. Awesome book A must rwd

There are so many areas in which a Christian man can fall into tempatation and sin, sometimes habitual sin. All Christians need encouragment to remain faithful, but especially men, and this book is directed toward men and the areas where men frequently fail. Since we all have our own unique character flaws and weaknesses, this book by Tony Evans covers all the bases and gives much needed encouragement to men who desire to remain faithfulness in their daily lives. Tony Evans uses examples from Biblical characters to show how character flaws create disaster for those who succumb to following their worldly desires. We often offer up excuses for our failings, such as "Everyone else is doing it", or "Compared to others, I'm really not all that bad". But Author Evans states that in order to become a Godly man (or woman), we must not have any excuses, thus the title of his book. So while an accountability group is probably the best way to remain faithful, books such as this one are good adjuncts and give insight into what drives sinful behavior and how to avoid the sinful snares. This is a good devotions book for personal study, or alternatively, makes a wonderful group study. It is not easy to be a Christian in today's society. This book will help those trying to live a faithful, holy, and honorable life. kone

I really enjoyed this book. Tony keeps it100 and has the Word to back it up. I recommend this book to every male that knows how to read, Not just Christian men. Everyone. It's enlightening, inspiring, motivational, and spiritually awakening. I thank God and pray for more men like Pastor Evans. I too Will leave a spiritual legacy!! Thank you my brother.

Very clear cut that men need to step up, wipe off the past, and get on with doing the right thing in all aspects of their lives without making any type of excuse when they don't. I could do without the use of "homey" and other slang words when referencing biblical greats, but I guess that's where Tony may be trying to reach a certain audience. The book is pretty spot on in describing that when men don't do the right, biblical, or even lawful thing, they make excuses that are inexcusable. There may be pathetic reasons we choose to blame for not doing what we are called to do, but reasons are not excuses. If you miss your kid's ballgame that you promised to be at, and you tell him "Sorry, I had more work to get done than I thought" that's a reason that doesn't fly. Simple fact is, you weren't there when you said you would be. Period. I was surprised that early in the book Tony addresses black men by immediately and bluntly killing the notion that slavery is any excuse these many years later for still calling on it as an excuse. I always appreciate Tony's straight forward manner of writing. Many scriptures are used to back up what he is saying. I plan to use this book as an "ice breaker" for a movement at our own church to help men see that their biblical role as a man does not allow for making excuses when they fail. Buck up up and admit you failed. Get up, wipe it off, and get back to doing what you're supposed to do.

It wasn't quite as challenging as I hoped and maybe I just wasn't in the right place to be reading it. I like the fact that it is in essence Character studies of Bible heroes and how they responded to situations and issues like integrity, purity etc. It is easy reading, but sometimes with a book like 'No More Excuses' you really don't want easy reading!
