How long are the handles when extended?

80 cm (31.5 inches in old money) from the end of the handle to the blue part where it joins mechanism.  It gives enough reach and plenty of leverage.

Will these work without using the ratchet?

hello jw,
bought these loppers about 3 years ago,had them about 5 months,they worked great
at first than they fell apart,so i sent them back.cutting hawthorn hedge so they did a lot of work.
i exchanged them  for alan titchmarsh loppers ,which have been great, price 59.45
can use with out ratchet.
also the spear and jackson loppers can be used with out ratchet.

Do you have to open the handles fully each time you "pump"? Sometimes space is limited.

Yes. The ratchet has to be allowed to click back in order for the pressure to be applied to the cut. If space is limited, ie not allowing the legs to open for the ratchet to click, disengage and slightly shift the cut this allows the action to be achieved with a number of smaller cuts instead of one large cut.

i have opened the handles fully but they won't close again,  cant pump anything help!

If you have opened the handles fully and heard the click and the blade won't open and the handles will not close again, well I had the same problem!  I used a pair of Mole grips (adjustable grips) to prise the blade out of the cutting bed.  Use some thickish newspaper to protect the blade from getting scratched by the grips then grip the blade hard and pull and with a bit of luck it will spring open and you'll be able to close the handles in stages using the ratchet action.  Hopefully this will do the trick.  My loppers now work perfectly.  There must be a flaw in the way they are manufactured now.  It's a nuisance because once opened they won't fit back into the box to return them to Amazon.   A bit of a pain, but this seemed to sort the problem.  Good luck.
